Review: New Girl, S1, E2 - "Kryptonite" (Who's the New Guy?) 1

Jess unleashing her mad

Wow. The opening has completely changed, yet again. I don’t like it. It seems contrived and is completely uninteresting. Um… I had such high hopes for New Girl. I miss Damon Wayans Jr. more than I thought I would. “Kryptonite” does absolutely nothing for me. I’ve watched the episode three times and I don’t think I laughed once. Not even with the fresh meat, Winston (Lamorne Morris), being bombarded with a singing Jess (Zooey Deschanel). “I’m Jessssssssss!”

Observations:

Nick (Jake Johnson) seems to be the funniest of the three guys. Johnson doesn’t force his lines or appear to be trying to make us laugh. Also, I’m waiting for something to happen between Nick and Jess.

Jess is still a basket case and I don’t understand how she allows Spencer (Ian Wolsterstorff) to walk all over her. As an aside, she looks beautiful when she first meets Spencer at the park. Her hair looks nice and her outfit fits her personality. (I applaud the costume, hair and makeup departments. You guys work some magic!) That’s about all I got from the scene. I expected a bit more punch from her ‘I’m over you’ speech. It wasn’t poignant, funny or good. For a school teacher, she seems pretty immature. I don’t think I’d want her teaching my kid how to tie her shoes.

Nick defending Jess against Spencer

Schmidt (Max Greenfield) is a douche. There’s no other way to describe him. He has a lost and found in his room? I think he’s overcompensating for his ambiguous sexuality. Yup, I think he might be gay. He tries too hard with women. But then again, he is a douche. The jokes with the substitution of his name for the word ‘shit’ are getting old. “Schmidt happens!” “You got some Schmidt on your face!” Forget about beating a dead horse. They’re pummeling the corpse, setting it on fire and spitting on its ashes. And this is only the second episode.

Funny lines:

Jess to pawn shop guy: “I just got out of a long relationship and I don’t know what I’m doing emotionally; or let’s be honest, sexually.”

**

Spencer to Jess as she runs into his place: “Jess, take your shoes off. We run an Asian household!”

I think the issue is the pilot episode was leagues away from “Kryptonite.” It was better in every way and almost seemed part of another show. The lighting was different, the tone was lighter, and the chemistry worked. Now, everything is off and I feel like I’ve been duped by the writer, Elizabeth Meriwether. She has a great premise for New Girl, but lost something along the way. With that being said, I’m keeping hope alive. This is only the second episode and I want to give the show a chance.
