Review: New Girl – “Injured” (Nick Should Get Tackled By Jess More Often)

Air Date: Tuesday, March 6, 2012, 9/8c on Fox

RATING:

“Why is no one helping me?!” – Nick

Was Jess trying to kill Nick? Sheesh!

“Injured” is funny on so many levels. There’s the obvious, Jess (Zooey Deschanel) tackling the hell out of Nick (Jake Johnson); the blatantly obvious, Nick’s lack of health insurance and freebie visits to an OB/GYN; and Schmidt’s (Max Greenfield) keen knowledge of vertebrae. The man knows way too much for me. He’s like an encyclopedia of useless and mostly wrong facts. His spiel makes me laugh while Nick writhes in pain. Seriously, Jess can hit. I wasn’t expecting that and I loved the “touch football” scene all the more for it.

Observations and thoughts:

Nick doesn’t have a wallet. I’ve never seen a grown man carry his money and ID in a plastic sandwich bag. I have to admit, it’s one of those endearing things you have to love about Nick. He’s down and out and doesn’t really care. His life sucks but hey, he’s doing what he wants. I think his blasé attitude is what makes Jess question why he hasn’t done anything in his life. He’s wasting time and doesn’t seem to care. Maybe now that he has a potential I-could-die moment, he’ll start to rethink his stance in life.

Loved seeing Nick lying backwards on the GYN table. Classic!

Does anyone else feel like Winston (Lamorne Morris) is the odd man out? While hanging out on the beach, the gang all pair off but him. He’s alone, wandering aimlessly, seemingly disappearing from the show altogether. What’s the point of him being there again? Oh right, there isn’t one. I want Winston to have a point. There are no witty lines, no outstanding comedic moments that can justify his presence anymore. Well, there is his car.  I’ve never seen a more hideous, beat-up piece of crap. Ever. Even his mechanic tells him, “This is not really, officially a car anymore.” Not only is it not a car, it’s a death trap and I’m glad it finally dies. “There’s soot coming in from the floor!” Who knows how long Winston would have driven around in that thing? But the man is attached. “Things happened in this car.” “Like what, Desert Storm?” I love Schmidt for bringing Winston back down to earth.

Funny lines:

Jess to an injured Nick: “What do you need?”

Nick: “Nothing from you. I can taste my spine.”

**

Jess to Nick as he walks to his car: “Are you sure you’re ok? You’re walking like a Disney witch.”

**

Nick: “Jess, is Sadie a gynecologist?”

Jess: “No. She’s an OB/GYN.”

**

Schmidt: “It’s so sad.”

Cece: “Yeah, it’s so sad that your friend is getting an ultrasound tomorrow.”

**

Nick to Jess: “I’ve done things. I wrote half a book about zombies.”

**

Nick has a bit of an almost, possibly, but not quite cancer scare, which brings about a few funny moments with the gang. I’m glad to see the writers are bringing the funny back. Although the first half of the show is hilarious, the second half merely holds its own. I don’t want to be too picky so I’m just gonna say, we can do better next week!
