Review: New Girl “Cece Crashes” (Yes, We Know You’re A Model, Cece)

Air Date: Tuesday, November 8, 2011, 9/8c on Fox

While you don’t see Jess (Zooey Deschanel) with many friends, the one constant in her life is her model friend Cece (Hannah Simone). I’m still not sure what kind of friend Cece is—loyal, understanding, self-absorbed—but she seems to care about Jess. Even to the point of pushing Jess toward things she doesn’t want to do (or believe). Enter the hapless and ‘old man dressing’ Nick (Jake Johnson). Cece gets it in her head that Nick likes Jess because his feet point in her direction. “A guy’s feet point at what they want.” What?

Observations:

Schmidt (Max Greenfield) kills it this episode (especially doing Parkour and passing out while hanging from his doorframe). I love every moment he’s on screen. “It’s on an poppin’!”He makes me laugh like no one else. How can you not crack up at his ridiculousness? He’s afraid of the cat on the roof. “It’s raised by birds.” That in itself is over the top funny. Just last week he was intent on seeing Nick’s junk; this week he knows he’ll get close to Cece. Yeah, in his dreams (or his bed after she’s fallen asleep). The woman is way out of his league and simply too much woman for him. “She’d eat you up.” I agree, Jess. There’s no way Schmidt could ever handle a woman like her because he’s still a little boy—a little boy in a kimono. Why don’t the guys tell him it’s a woman’s robe? Yes, it’s funny as hell seeing him in it, but he looks a little too comfortable in it, if you catch my drift.

Winston (Lamorne Morris) is usually the voice of reason but he gets sucked into the Cece whirlwind as well. Watching him stutter incoherently and rush to make her a sandwich proves he isn’t as strong against the power she wields as he likes to believe.

The point of “Cece Crashes” is beyond me. Are we supposed to see how Jess interacts with her friend during a crisis, or how the guys fall all over themselves when a beautiful woman is around? Jess warns them about Cece’s ‘grabby hands’ when she’s drunk, but things don’t seem to go that far. I’m not looking for any philosophical enlightening from New Girl, but I do expect an episode to have a point. This one doesn’t, though it is funny. I guess I can’t ask for too much more from a comedy than that.

Funny lines:

Winston to Schmidt about what’s under his kimono: “Are you even wearing underwear? What is between you and that chair?”

Schmidt: “Just a little bit of sunshine.”

**

Schmidt about his kimono: “This is handcrafted… in China.”

**

Nick to Cece about why he doesn’t want to dance: “No, I don’t dance. I’m from the town in Footloose.”

**

Schmidt, after seeing Cece in a little towel: “Did you see that cleavage? I just wanna get my arm stuck down there like 127 Hours style. And then, and then [making sawing noises] just cut it for days. I don’t care; I’ll cut through the bone and the nerves.”

**

Jess to Nick about Cece: “Sometimes she just calls me up and she’s like ‘Bitch, I love you,’ and then she just hangs up. No other information.”

**

It’ll be interesting to see what else the writer, Liz Meriwether, has in store for us this season. I’d actually like to see an episode where Jess is at work. I sometimes forget she’s a schoolteacher. Just that thought alone is enough to garner a fantastically hilarious episode. I mean, she teaches children, people. How insane is that?
