Unsolved Mysteries 2020, Episodes 1-6
Air Date: Wednesday, July 1, 2020 streaming on Netflix
Reviewer Rating: 4 Stars
Growing up in the 80s and 90s, I gravitated to shows like Unsolved Mysteries (1988-2002) and The X-Files (1993) because they explored the unknown, mysterious, supernatural and paranormal. The X-Files returned for two additional seasons in 2016-2018 and I devoured those episodes with the same fervor as the original series. Then when I heard Unsolved Mysteries would get a reboot with all-new mysteries on Netflix, I couldn’t wait to watch.
Sure, 2020 has been the year of fear and the unknown. First with the novel Corona Virus (COVID-19), then murder hornets, and cannibal rats in New York, so why would I want to watch something like this, right? This series isn’t scary (at least not to me) or trying to instill fear. Unsolved Mysteries tries to shed light on cold cases, maybe get new leads to solve them, debunk a mystery, and yes, there is a UFO case that had me convinced of a potential government cover-up.
While the original series aired in 1988-2002 with late actor Robert Stack as the host, this new installment of Unsolved Mysteries doesn’t have a host. What it does have is the iconic opening theme song. In the introduction of each episode, that melody plays and at the end, there is a faded image of Robert Stack in the background as an homage.
From the original creators, the new Unsolved Mysteries has episodes comprised of eyewitness testimonies and reenactments of cold cases, unsolved crimes, missing persons, and unexplained phenomenon. The episodes are engaging and compelling. The production value is visually appealing. Cases are from all over the United States and one case is from France.
The editing of each episode is well done. It feels cohesive and complete. The story telling pulls you into these strangers’ lives, reliving their harrowing experiences and anguish. If you love true-crime documentaries, then this is a must-see series.
In the first six-episodes, I naturally was drawn to the “Berkshires UFO” episode. After watching it, I truly believe there is something awry, a possible conspiracy. It happened in 1969 at the height of the ‘space race’ with events taking place in the New England states. Testimonies coming in from various cities with people who had no connection to each other yet experiencing the same strange anomalies in the night sky.
There is so much packed into each of these episodes ranging from 52 to 39 minutes per episode. Despite the lack of a host (wearing a tan trench coat) to guide you through the episode, recapping and highlighting key points of the case at hand, I found in this updating version, the actual people giving their heartfelt, sometimes painful recollection of events that transpired gripping and powerful.
In the first episode, “Mystery on the Rooftop,” a young married couple move to Baltimore to start their life, but things change rapidly when the husband disappears. The way it’s presented, it seems something otherworldly may have happened but if you pay close attention, you’ll question everything. Some friendships are not as thick as one perceived.
All the stories left an indelible impression; however, one that strikes me as the most horrific and odd is the one from France. “House of Terror” has all the elements of a grandiose international thriller complete with an aristocratic family and a bizarre series of events which include the United States DEA.
At the end of each episode, there is a note asking the audience if they have any information on the case or know any information on the family and/or victims, to contact local law enforcement or reach out online. If you’re looking for an intriguing and thought-provoking series, watch Unsolved Mysteries. It will have you thinking and hopefully make you curious. Who knows, you may be the one to help solve a case.
