Review: Lost Girl, S1 Ep 10, “The Mourning After” – Sister in Crime?

Air date: Monday, March 19, 2012, 10/9c, on Syfy

Rating:

Bo’s (Anna Silk) investigative business is coming along nicely. There are plenty of odd crimes to solve. Collette (Natalie Lisinska) solicits Bo and Kenzi’s (Ksenia Solo) help to rule out her sister’s death as a suicide. Bertram (Arnold Pinnock), a Fae Albaster that feeds off human sexual shame, is the culprit. Albasters are mortal enemies of the Succubi.

Bo (Anna Silk) and Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) investigate a girl's death

Kenzi’s crazy hairstyle changes amuse me but this week her look is downright unattractive. She looks bedraggled, with the streaks of red and blonde running through her hair. How hard would it be to keep the color all black with the blunt bangs? This is her most becoming look. Aside from that, she’s a terrific sidekick for Trick (Rick Howland). He asks for her help in recovering a lost coin to save The Dal Riata, which provides an interesting reveal about Trick. Kenzi handles it all with aplomb, practically running the investigation herself. Trick’s secretive nature won’t cave in, though, even after Kenzi says, “Takes a con to know a con. You’ve got secrets, Trickster.” Will this lead to more Kenzi and Trick investigations? I hope so, if only to see the huge smile on Trick’s face again. He doesn’t smile all that much. Actually, Kenzi would be a great partner for anyone in an investigation. The danger is Kenzi becoming the victim of her own coolness.

The focal point of “The Mourning After” is the arrival of Saskia (Inga Cadranel), a Dark Fae Succubus. Imagine Bo’s excitement at meeting a potential mentor and the two of them sharing their adventures. Problem is, Saskia is plenty experienced and doesn’t have a conscience to speak of. They couldn’t be any more different from each other if they tried. Even though Bertram is their mortal enemy, Bo doesn’t want to murder him outright; she only wants him to stop killing women. She was brought up very much like a human so her existence collides with Saskia, who has little remorse and empathy for living, breathing things. When Saskia kills Bertram, and Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) tells Bo they will cover it up, she is depressed and clings to him, a rather uncharacteristic move for her. You see her longing for a connection with her own, so when she and Kenzi come together at home, Bo clings to her as she does with Dyson. The look on Kenzi’s face tells us this is another uncharacteristic move, which makes the gesture all the more poignant. The sad part is while Kenzi recounts her adventure with Trick, Bo looks longingly at the red jacket Saskia left behind. Will she ever find a kinship with her own kind, a Succubus with empathy for human life?

Bo (Anna Silk) and Saskia (Inga Cadranel) investigate

This is the first time Kenzi and Bo have their own investigation. Kenzi, however, senses she can’t compete with Bo so she leaves of her own accord. I miss seeing the duo together, but it’s inevitable they will seek their own adventures. Hopefully this will propel the show, and give us glimpses of both characters’ pasts and presents. I still need to know more about Kenzi; we just don’t know enough. She has the best lines, and how about her cute affectations with foreign accents? Employing a Cockney accent at The Dal Riata, and a Russian accent at the singles mixer? It’s pretty funny.
