Review: Justified, Season 2, Ep 11 “Full Commitment”

Airdate: Wednesday, April 20, 2011 10PM E/P

Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens

Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) and Winona (Natalie Zea) were nearly gunned down in last week’s episode “Debts and Accounts,” so Art (Nick Searcy) has Tim (Jacob Pitts) and Rachel (Erica Tazel) keep an eye on them. Tim, a former Army Ranger, finds himself at odds when Raylan gives him the slip, twice. What’s surprising in “Full Commitment” is what we learn about Gary (William Ragsdale).

Natalie Zea as Winona

Winona chose Raylan and I think that’s what pushed Gary to the edge. He’s not just the quiet husband who makes himself appear to be the more stable of the two men, oh no. Gary has a dark side – very dark. His little meeting with Duffy (Jere Burns) in “Brother’s Keeper” turned out to be more than a business opportunity, and this week we learn why he made such a fuss with the divorce lawyers in last week’s “Debts and Accounts. He hired Duffy to take out Raylan and make it seem like Winona was caught in the crosshairs. I was pretty shocked Gary would stoop so low but he did mortgage their house for a race horse. Gary is an idiot.

The power shift in both Bennett and Harlan Counties is coming to a nasty head. Dickie (Jeremy Davies), who’s been cut out of the Bennett family by his mama, Mags (Margo Martindale), seeks to put Boyd (Walton Goggins) out of business. These two guys are in the middle of a turf war and people are going to die. Two of Dickie’s new recruits can’t handle it, but once you join, you can’t just walk away – you die. As for Boyd, I think recruiting Raylan’s daddy, Arlo Givens (Raymond J. Barry), may not have been the smartest move. I know Arlo has experience, but he’s not as fast as he used to be and with his leg healing from the gunshot wound, that limp of his is a dead giveaway. After Boyd swoops in on a marijuana transaction between Dickie and Rodney “Hot Rod” Dunham (guest star Mickey Jones), Dickie is more than fired up, he’s out for blood…Arlo’s blood. I told you that limp was going to be a dead giveaway.

Another major development has been the relationship between Ava (Joelle Carter) and Boyd. I understand the attraction – Boyd has always been polite and respectful and has defended Ava’s honor on more than one occasion. And Ava doesn’t seem to mind his criminal activities but she does have one thing she won’t tolerate – prostitution. Of all things to have a problem with, it’s “whores” that has her putting her foot down. I guess armed robbery and selling drugs are fine. The conversation they have in bed is hilarious.

Ava: “There’s something I need you to promise me.”

Boyd: “What’s that?”
Ava: “No whores.”

Boyd: “Oh Ava, I ain’t been to a whore since I was 14 years old.”

Of course we knew she meant for him to not run a prostitution ring and his response is laced with humorous sarcasm.

Boyd (smiling): “Oh well now hold on a second, I mean, the economy what it is, now’s not the time to cut off potential revenue streams.”

“Full Commitment” was a bit bloody and very sad. A Givens does die but it’s not the Givens you think. Dickie was out for blood, he just shot the wrong person. Or did he? Maybe he did it on purpose?
