Review: Hung “What’s Going on Downstairs?” or “Don’t Eat Prince Eric!”

Air Date: Sunday, November 13, 2011, 10:00 PM ET/PT on HBO

The physical comedy in “What’s Going on Downstairs?” or “Don’t Eat Eric!” throws me for a loop and I love every second of it! Who would have guessed the writers of Hung had ice skating up their sleeve? While I’ve never strapped skinny blades onto my feet and sailed across a frozen bed of ice (nor will I ever), I love watching the actors gliding around the rink, showing off their moves. As I patiently wait to see who falls first, I laugh like a loon as soon as they do! And you know it has to be my girl, Tanya (Jane Adams).

I love Tanya. I truly adore her which is why I feel totally duped and know she will too. I don’t know if we are blind or just clueless to what’s going on, but clearly Charlie (Lennie James) is not trustworthy. Of course, he’s a pimp, so the lack of trust should come with the territory, but sometimes you want to believe in the good in someone. While she has no idea what’s happened yet, I’m not sure what Tanya will do once she discovers his treachery. In all fairness, she should have seen it coming. I’d like to think Charlie has been warning her all along that he’d screw her over, yet she doesn’t want to see the truth.

Observations:

Ray (Thomas Jane) shows us the man he’s made of. Not only does he go against the grain—doing something completely out of his comfort zone—he sticks his neck out there to take care of a client. Not just any client, either. I keep thinking he’ll run away and never want to see Kyla (Jamie Clayton) again, but he surprises me. Yeah, he does it to one up Jason (Stephen Amell), but he still goes through with his date and makes her feel important in the process.

Lenore (Rebecca Creskoff) is on the warpath and if Tanya and Ray still don’t know what’s coming, they better get ready. Not only does Lenore know what Jason is up to (she’s kind of turning into a stalker) she has her hand in everyone’s lives. She can get to Ray through Jessica (Anne Heche); she can walk right into the Wellness Center to go after Tanya; and we know she has no issues busting into Jason and Sandee’s (Analeigh Tipton) apartment. The truth is Lenore has no one else to mess with. She seems like a lonely woman who wants to be the belle of the ball, but can’t even get an invitation to the party. So she crashes it—hard. I think her actions may backfire on her though. She’s going to piss someone off to the point where they will retaliate and it’ll hit Lenore like a ton of bricks.

I wonder how the steps Ray takes in this episode will affect his future. Not only does he reveal who he is to Kyla’s former classmates, he says he’s her “fiancé.” Of course, with Kyla being a transvestite, it has to have some reflection on Ray. Do you think he’ll care one way or the other? Or, will this lead him to out himself and tell everyone who’s important to him that he’s a gigolo?

Funny line:

Charlie to Tanya about the ways of hoes: “Sometimes hoes steal. They’re not nuns, they’re hoes.”

**

I want to believe Charlie is looking out for Tanya, taking care of the things she doesn’t want to get her hands dirty with, but I know better. His advice is handy and probably aides in her making more money (since we know she’ll need it), though I don’t know if I can believe that. He’s a pimp and he’s doing what a pimp does. Let’s hope this doesn’t harden Tanya and make her go crazy. I know she can handle a belt when she needs to! I fall deeper in love with Hung with each new episode and can’t wait until Sunday night rolls around.
