My first thought as the opening credits roll is, “I can’t believe we’re at the end of another great season of one of my favorite dramedies.” That said, I’m let down by this finale and want a redo. “The Whole Beefalo” is not the way to end the season. Last week’s episode would have been a much better choice. Although, this season does go out with a bang (quite literally), I feel something is missing; the writing may have been off or maybe I missed the punch line. Ray (Thomas Jane) has grown on me over this past season and I’ve come to see he’s quite a guy. Above all else, he’s a family man and he cares about the relationships in his life. So of course I think Ray is talking to Jessica (Anne Heche) as “The Whole Beefalo” begins, but it turns out to be a fantasy he’s fulfilling for a client. Just what won’t he do in his line of work? Actually, the better question is will he continue to have his line of work?

Observations:

Tanya (Jane Adams) is in a lot of trouble. Listening to Selling records and wallowing in her misery is not going to fix things. “You don’t get to fix the problem by yourself, little lady; it’s my problem too!” I love Ray for wanting to be sure she knows he’s not going to leave her alone in her time of distress. She’s his lifeline just as much as he is hers. They need one another and doggone if they don’t make a great team. I seriously love seeing the two of them on screen together. They are a dynamic duo of comedic genius and seem so in tune with one another. It’s crazy how well they mesh. I almost get the feeling they’re family and not just co-workers.

The true definition of a dumb whore = Jason

Lenore (Rebecca Creskoff) is always coming out on top, isn’t she? “I want to be the best; I want you to make me the best.” Jason (Stephen Amell) is nothing but a dumb whore but it’s what he does best. I wonder how Sandee (Analeigh Tipton) met him and fell in love. Scratch that, I don’t want to know. What I know is, Lenore is a hard woman to keep down, and if she steals Jason back from Tanya, she’s getting the top pimp card.

I know not to count Sandee out, but it’s obvious Lenore didn’t get the memo. Sandee is just as manipulative as Lenore but does it in a sweet way. Like with cake. She’s definitely in the wrong line of business. Selling cakes should not be her main occupation.

Funny lines:

Sandee: “Nana died, Jason. In the tub.”

Jason: “Oh no. she fell?”

Sandee’s dad: “No. She just died. In the tub.”

Tanya to Ray about parking on a country road: “What? Are you gonna put money in the meter?”

This is where the episode lost me. Charlie has a farm?

The big idea Tanya and Ray have to make their money back is hilarious. Stealing cows Ray calls “beefalo.” While not a daring caper, it does make for an interesting solution to their problem. What more trouble can these two get into? No matter what, they’ll stick together and come out with only a speck of dirt in their eye.

Who knew Charlie (Lennie James) had a farm out in the country? James is completely underused in this episode and I am truly disappointed with the way Charlie is essentially pushed out of the picture. But, what can you do?

Although “The Whole Beefalo” is a little lackluster on Tanya and Ray’s part, Sandee and Jessica steal the show. Sandee isn’t one to be messed with and Lenore learns that lesson the hard way. Do you think Jason will stick around to catch the fallout from Sandee’s actions? Now he’s free to do what he wants, until Sandee catches up to him. And Jessica finally sticks up for herself. I am so proud of her for putting on her big girl panties and handling her business. While she goes about it in a Lenore-type way, she gets her point across and proves she’s not just a dumb blonde. Kudos to Heche for being a scene stealer. She’s definitely brought Jessica’s character from the background into the forefront. Who would win in a fight between her and Sandee I wonder?
