Air Date: Sunday, October 23, 2011, 10/9c on HBO
Ray (Thomas Jane) is finally living it up, having a ball and enjoying himself. So of course, you know something will go wrong. It just has to, right? How can he have anything go right in his life without there being some catch? What’s the one thing that can ruin him? I ponder that question as I watch “F. Me Mr. Drecker” or “Let’s Not Go to Jail.”
Ray has a problem misunderstanding with Lydia (Ana Ortiz), and the fact she’s an actual police officer throws a wrench in his night. I find it hilarious the way Ray and Tanya (Jane Adams) handle their issues. Not only do they go about things in a completely asinine manner, they never actually solve their problems. It’s like sweeping dirt under the rug. The dirt may be hidden, but it’s still there.
“So your ho gets a black eye or two. It’s better than pissing her off and getting arrested, right?” Sounds logical doesn’t it? Why did Tanya bail Charlie (Lennie James) out of jail? She doesn’t get to answer right away, but I think the reason is she needs him. Not only is he good at what he does, he can get her to do her job better. Though she doesn’t seem to think so. “How you come to me for advice like I’m some kinda… magical Yoda Negro, but you don’t listen?” Tanya would be lost without Charlie’s knowledge. Hell, Lenore (Rebecca Creskoff) is kicking her ass in the pimping department, and who better than Charlie (a true pimp in every meaning of the word) to help her step up her game?
Observations:
Jason (Stephen Amell) really is a whore (which I guess I saw coming, but still). And an idiot. I almost feel sorry for him—okay, not really. He has control issues. The women in his life (his fiancée and Lenore) seem to rule over him but the only thing he can use to his advantage is sex. His mojo only works on Tanya and his clients, not the two women who keep him on a leash. He needs to grow a pair.
“Am I too big? I’m too big.” Matt (Matt Walsh), poor Matt. How freaking clueless is he? If he can’t tell what the problem is (um, singing during sex Matt, seriously?), there’s no helping him. What the hell is Jessica (Anne Heche) thinking anyway? Not only her dalliance (ew!) with Matt but her judging Ray. He’s human, over 21, and no longer married to her! She’s upset with him for moving on (albeit with a younger woman) yet she’s cavorting with her boss. Hello! Pot meet kettle. Heche does an excellent job with her sneezing, musical interludes. She’s a great actress and I’d love to see more from her throughout the season.
Funny lines:
Tanya gets on Ray after his talk with Lydia.
Tanya: “She says that you want to fuck her forever?”
Ray: “Those, those are not the words I used.”
Tanya: “Well, those are the words that she heard, okay?”
**
I laugh a lot during this episode, but find it misses the mark when it comes to Tanya. She’s struggling and I feel horrible for her. This is not the Tanya I’ve come to know and love. Why ask Charlie his advice and then not take it? Why cling to the pimp code when you won’t abide by the rules? Tanya’s not thinking clearly nor is she following her heart. It could be because she has Charlie living with her and Lenore is on her back, but I think she’s just in over her head. She needs to get her priorities straight and get back to handling business. I thought her pimp hand was strong, now I think it’s just meh.
