Why is Weaver (Will Patton) so hell bent on being “by the book,” explicitly trusting Terry (guest star Henry Czerny) in spite of all the red flags Tom (Noah Wyle) has pointed out? It’s been 48 hours since Terry took all the kids, including Tom’s three boys Hal (Drew Roy), Ben (Connor Jessup), and Matt (Maxim Knight), to the 7th Mass compound and still no sign of the 2nd Mass escorts or 3rd Mass convoy showing up with Col. Porter’s (Dale Dye) “new orders.” I know this is a critical time for humanity, but all the signs are pointing to ‘danger Will Robinson, danger!’
Even Mike (Martin Roach) blindly trusts Terry, citing he’s known Terry since the week after the aliens attacked. That’s only six months ago and you haven’t seen this guy in how long? Luckily, Hal and Lourdes (Gabrielle Seychelle) are able to plant the seed of doubt in Mike’s mind when Lourdes finds young Eli’s (Gage Munroe) backpack. Knowing Mike gives the ultimate sacrifice to save the kids, it pains me to watch him struggle as tries desperately to connect with his own son, Rick, who sadly no longer identifies with the human race.
Hal really steps up as a leader of sorts for the younger kids after losing Mike. After escaping from the compound, Hal leads the kids to a suburb area where they take shelter in an abandoned house. While the younger kids sleep, Ben volunteers to run for help. It seems Ben doesn’t get tired much. How long does the effect of the harness last? Has it permanently altered his body’s composition?
And is it just me or is Hal a ladies’ man? He’s got young Tessa Greene (Sarah Stunt) swooning over him so much she’s hoping her dad will let her keep him like the family pet instead of giving him up to the Skitters with the others. Lourdes still holds a flame but I’m not sure what Margaret’s agenda is because holding Hal’s hand at Mike’s memorial service seems out of character for her. My question is have they completely forgotten about Karen (Jessy Schram)?) Remember her, she’s Hal’s girlfriend who was taken by the Skitters when they initially tried to save Ben but got Rick instead.
It seems our renegade marauder Pope (Collin Cunningham) may not be such a douche bag after all. I thought he spilled his guts about the 2nd Mass to save his own skin, but it looks like he didn’t volunteer information to Terry and Greene (J.D. Nicholsen), his second in command. At first I thought he just took off after he escapes his prison, but he comes to the aid of Hal and the kids when they take fire from Terry’s posse. As he gets shot in his leg, Pope sees Tom coming up. Tom finds Pope’s presence a bit unusual until Pope explains, “I got no tolerance for anybody who gets in bed with the Skitters.”
Meanwhile, back at the 2nd Mass, Sarah (Melissa Kramer), one of the civilians, is ready to give birth. Margaret seems to have become closer to Sarah, but I don’t think she likes the image it’s giving her. Margaret wants to appear hardened and unapproachable; however, her actions speak louder. Even Weaver gets in on the delivery when it’s discovered Sarah’s baby is in the breech position. It takes Anne (Moon Bloodgood) by surprise when Weaver steps up to help. Perhaps it’s because Weaver lost his two daughters and sees this as a way to contribute.
I had previously thought Weaver might be Tom’s father-in-law but now I’m not so sure. Although, I did find it an odd turn of phrase when Weaver tells Tom he’s not just another civilian. Is there something more about Tom that hasn’t been revealed?
The most intriguing part of “Sanctuary – Part 2” is Rick’s behavior in contrast to Ben’s. Both of these boys had been harnessed;, however, while it took days for Rick to come around, it only took Ben a few hours. Rick seems to be in a constant state of observance, staring off into the distance while Ben tries to play with the other kids. Rick even comments when they are having dinner at the compound, “How can you eat their food?” But it is the final conversation after they give Rick the American flag at Mike’s memorial that has my mind spinning.
Rick: “I don’t understand how people can kill each other.”
Ben: “I’m sorry about your dad.”
Rick: “Why? Killing is in their nature.”
Ben: “Their nature?”
Rick: “The humans. We would never kill one of our own. You should understand that.”
Is Rick still connected to the Skitter in some way? His harness has been removed but could the connection be deeper because of his previous illness? Ben seems to be thinking as he did prior to the harness, only now he’s able to be physically active for longer periods of time. Could Ben still be connected on some level as well? Are the Skitters getting a birds-eye view of the human race through their eyes?
