“There’s only one conductor of the orchestra.”
– Wilford
—
In last week’s episode, “Our Answer For Everything,” Wilford (Sean Bean) told Skyes (Chelsea Harris), “Tell the Headwoods to prep Icy Bob; it’s time.” In “The Eternal Engineer,” we find out exactly what time it is and it’s not good, at least not for the citizens on Snowpiercer. The title sums it up, Wilford is the eternal engineer and he’s been trying to get Snowpiercer back for the last seven years but it’s how he went about reclaiming the train that really sucks.
As with every episode this second season, a lot of things happen but some are more significant in the forefront, while others are stewing quietly in the background.
Things I Noticed:
- Josie (Katie McGuiness) is healing quite nicely with the Headwood’s (Damian Young and Sakina Jaffrey) “goo” they use to heal frostbite. It seems this miraculous substance does more than just heal and repair damaged skin tissue.
- Wilford pays a visit to Josie and shows her unusual kindness. I believe her recovery will be a key turning point either in the upcoming two-hour finale to push the show’s plot forward for season three.
- Snowpiercer is experiencing some technical difficulties, and when Alexandra (Rowan Blanchard) sees Icy Bob (Andre Tricoteux) walking on top of the train, she pieces together Wilford’s plans. Sabotage the train just enough so that they call on Wilford to help.
- The passengers on Snowpiercer are divided but the split isn’t as even as Layton (Daveed Diggs) and Brakeman Roche (Mike O’Malley) think.
- Roche must deal with issues at home – his wife Anne (Elaine Kao) doesn’t like that he’s sending their surviving daughter Carly (Esther Li) for her safety. And Anne seems to be leaning Pro-Wilford.
- It takes irrefutable evidence to finally convince the last Breachman standing, Boscovic (Aleks Paunovic) that Wilford is the reason behind the murders and why Snowpiercer is having mechanical errors. He goes outside to clear debris from the vents and realizes someone had to put it there on purpose. (hint: it was Icy Bob).
- The conversation with Josie and a very frostbitten Icy Bob is quite intriguing. He whispers, “I’ve served my purpose.” Then Mrs. Headwood comes by and tells Josie, “Years of grafting synthetic tissue, horrible frostbite like yours; we rebuilt him. And now, we’ll never discover his full potential. We need you resting, now more than ever.” All the “goo” they used on Josie has altered her skin to withstand extreme cold. Josie proves her theory by boldly sticking her hand outside. The results are extraordinary. That’s why Wilford is being so nice to Josie. He needs her and her new abilities.
- A rumor that “the Jackboots that survived the revolution have rebuilt a command.” That’s very interesting.
- Miss Audrey (Lena Hall) is definitely looking comfortable on Big Alice. I’m not sure if it’s a ruse or if she’s truly “defected.”
- Layton tries to reassure his new team that they will keep Wilford’s presence in the engine a secret, but he ends with, “If it all goes to shit, you’ll know. I’ll send up a flare.”
- The cat is out of the bag and everyone knows Wilford is on the train, saving the day. They don’t know he caused the whole debacle; all they know and care about is their so-called savior is fixing the engine.
- Layton is taken into custody and being transported to Big Alice.
- Roche is ordered to see Wilford on Big Alice but when Miss Audrey is there to escort him, I get a bad feeling. He’s taken into a medical room where his wife and daughter are already in drawers, and one is waiting for him. That’s a low blow.
- Ben (Iddo Goldberg) reluctantly relinquishes the engine to Wilford.

The plot thickens is an understatement. We still don’t know what’s going on with Melanie (Jennifer Connelly). The last we saw of her, she was running to catch the train as it whizzed by. I know Alexandra will do whatever she can to save her mom, but she may not get a chance now that Wilford has taken control of both trains.
The two-hour season finale airs Monday, March 29, 2021.
