“I think Kanan got the girl hit in Miami. I think Kanan’s been behind all the hits on our business the whole time. I think it’s revenge. I gotta feel him out more to be sure.” – Ghost
For a supposedly savvy businessman, Jamie “Ghost” St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick) can’t see the forest for the trees when it comes to Kanan (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson). Or can he? As if he doesn’t have enough problems, Ghost struggles to keep everything and everyone under his control. Although, once Tasha (Naturi Naughton) learns the truth about his trip to Miami in last week’s episode, “Like We’re Any Other Couple,” all hell breaks loose. Ghost has his hands full in this week’s installment, “You’re the Only Person I Can Trust,” a most befitting title.
A fair share of naked bodies has been on display in Power and “You’re the Only Person I Can Trust” continues the tradition quite well with Shawn’s (Sinqua Walls) romp with LaKeisha (La La Anthony), as well as the bedroom scene involving Shawn’s parents, Kanan and Jarita (Tasha Smith). I truly enjoy watching Power for its story lines but seeing glimpses of these fine men, and women, certainly doesn’t hurt! OK, ok, back to the episode at hand.
I know Ghost is in love with Angela—or at least he thinks he is—but in my mind, he has a much stronger connection with Tasha. She’s been through thick and thin with him, plus she’s the mother of his children. Tasha loves Ghost, and understands who he is and what makes him tick. She runs his household, and is a terrific mom who offers herself up to him at a moment’s notice. Simply put, Tasha is the ‘Bonny’ to Ghost’s ‘Clyde.’ Although, for a smart man, Ghost is stupid. A cheater knows never to leave evidence behind. Unfortunately, Tasha finds out Angela (Lela Loren) accompanied Ghost on the Miami trip. Empathizing with Tasha is easy, especially if you’ve ever had a man cheat on you.
With problems arising all around him, Ghost does his best to bring Tasha back into the fold but it looks like she finally sees the light. I guess Ghost won’t be having his cake and eating it too—if Tasha sticks to her guns. Speaking of guns, girl sure knows how to handle one when Kanan unexpectedly drops by! The way he looks at Tasha is akin to a lion getting ready to eat its prey. Although Jackson is a handsome man with a killer bod, my entire being shuddered during that scene. Kanan is a dangerous man. Not only is he out for revenge against Tommy and Ghost, what he does to Broc (Antoine Harris), one of Dre’s (Rotimi) crew, is particularly gruesome. I guess it’s one way to keep Dre in line.
Under false pretenses, Ghost has Kanan meet him at the bar inside the hotel where he’s staying. There are moments in this scene when it’s difficult to know whether Ghost trusts Kanan, or is merely playing him. My guess is he’s feeling Kanan out. The way Hardwick uses a mere smile, a lingering glance, and just the right pause between sentences is not only due to his terrific acting skills but the excellent direction of Bill Johnson as well. What a showdown it will be when Ghost confirms what he already knows in his heart.
Ghost has other troubles to deal with besides Kanan, and finally decides to do something about Tommy (Joseph Sikora). Not only has Tommy “drunk from the Kanan Kool-Aid™,” he is so wrapped up with Holly (Lucy Walters), his head isn’t truly in the game. Tommy nearly goes over the line during a confrontation with Julio (J.R. Ramirez) but if Ghost thinks his plan to separate Holly and Tommy will solve things, he’s sadly mistaken. It will only mess with Tommy’s heart and head even more. Besides, Holly cannot be trusted; her suggestion to alter Ghost’s plan is highly suspect.
Meanwhile, Greg tries to fool Mike Sandoval (David Fumera) about his reasons for wanting Angela back on the task force, but the only person Greg is truly fooling is himself. Ever hear the expression “Be careful what you ask for?” Well, it applies to both Greg and Angela in “You’re the Only Person I Can Trust.” Is love that blind, or are they both that stupid? After all, more than just their personal relationships are at stake here. Why Angela thinks she and Ghost can “just be us” is beyond me. My Spidey senses tell me it’s not going to end well for either of them; it’s just a matter of who’s going to pay the ultimate price and when.
Other Observations
If there is one person I have come to despise this season, it’s Kantos (Adam Huss). Even though Ghost reminds him, “I was always good to you when you worked for me, Kantos,” Kantos is a traitor, pure and simple. I loathe the way he uses “we” and “us” when talking to Ghost about hosting a party at Truth for “Vibe Magazine.” There is something in the look Ghost gives Kantos that makes me think Kantos is going to pay dearly for his betrayal.
Memorable Line
Tommy to Holly: “You said you were lonely. So I got a bitch for my bitch.”
You may think it’s funny, Tommy, but I guarantee Holly doesn’t agree—no matter how damn cute that puppy is.
Overall
Writer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich gives us a gripping, suspenseful episode with “You’re the Only Person I Can Trust.” I love when an episode leaves me with so many questions, I can’t wait to see what happens next. Such is the case with this week’s installment of Power. I’m sure I’m not the only one who wants to know whether Tommy will be able to “focus on business” as Ghost requests? And, is this truly the end of Ghost and Tasha’s marriage? It’s obvious Ghost wants to be Jamie rather than Ghost, contrary to what Tasha wants, but is he willing to give up the love of his life? I fear for Ghost with what he does with the money when Julio leaves the room; what the hell was he thinking? You know this is going to come back and bite him in that fine ass of his. And what’s going to happen with Holly now that she’s in FBI custody? Just what is that business in Ohio Greg mentions to her?
