“Who gives a fuck if Valdes gets disbarred?” — Cooper Saxe
As the title of this week’s episode of Power suggests, things are not looking good for James St. Patrick, aka Ghost (Omari Hardwick). Besides having to deal with being accused of a crime he didn’t commit, the inmates and Marshals, particularly Marshal Clyde Williams (Charlie Murphy), aren’t very friendly, to put it mildly. Of note is the interest inmate Tony Teresi (William Sadler) takes in Ghost, especially after he finds out Ghost and Tommy (Joseph Sikora) grew up together. I wonder if it has something to do with the promise Teresi makes to his wife Connie (Mercedes Ruehl).
But Ghost isn’t the only one having a hard time. Tasha (Naturi Naughton) tries to explain what’s happening with Ghost to Raina (Donshea Hopkins) and Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) but she gets opposing reactions from her children. While Raina is scared, when did Tariq come to dislike his father so much he’s glad Ghost is in jail? I know Kanan, aka Slim (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson), has been feeding Tariq a line of bullshit about his dad but what happened to loving your parent no matter what?
Attorney Joe Proctor (Jerry Ferrara) explains to Ghost why it’s so important to keep a low profile in prison. I must say, Proctor is pretty damn good at figuring out what AUSA John Mak (Sung Kang) and the rest of his team have up their sleeves. I particularly like the juxtaposition between Ghost’s conversations with Proctor, and Mike Sandoval’s (David Fumero) talks with Cooper Saxe (Shane Johnson), SAC (Special Agent in Charge) Jerry Donovan (Ty Jones), and Mak (while AUSA Angela Valdes (Lela Loren) eavesdrops) about the strategy they plan to use. Well, that and her sexual relationship with Ghost. It’s interesting that while both sides haven’t a clue as to what the other is planning, they both reach the same conclusion, although for different reasons. With what Angela overhears the team saying, I wonder how long it will be before she changes her mind about prosecuting Ghost, if at all. I love the way Loren uses facial expressions to convey Angela’s feelings, especially the one of distrust for her team.
I can’t wait to find out what the backstory is between Proctor and Mak. Obviously, there is one because why else would they be having a “pissing match” in front of Judge Tapper (Michael Gaston). But what’s most important about the outcome of said pissing match is what Sandoval takes upon himself to do. His actions make me wonder if Ghost is ever going to get out of prison. And not only Ghost; now it looks like the feds are going to go after Tommy too. Let’s not forget they think Tommy is Ghost.
Dre (Rotimi Akinosho) certainly seems to have things under control at Truth, doesn’t he? I’m not so sure Ghost would be happy with the contents of the little box Dre insists be given to Truth’s customers when they order bottles of champagne and liquor. After all, Ghost was all about going legit long before he was carted off to jail. My question is, where does Dre’s loyalty truly lie – with Ghost or Kanan? Ghost has given Dre a tremendous opportunity to grow, not only in his career, but as a man. And with Dre paying Kanan to stay away from Tariq, I’m pretty sure he’s enjoying being a legit businessman. What do you think? Playing both sides against the middle isn’t a very smart thing for Dre to do—especially when Tasha and Ghost find out Kanan is alive and he didn’t tell them.
Tommy is having problems with the drug business, particularly with Cristobal (Matt Cedeño) who doesn’t like that Tommy is in charge now. While Tommy knows he needs to take care of things, he realizes the best leader knows how to delegate. Enter Julio (J.R. Ramirez), who succeeds in getting Cristobal back in line. Julio’s failure to defend Marcus (McKinley Belcher III) against Cristobal’s homey Domingo (Gabriel Rodriquez aka G-Rod) doesn’t sit well with Tommy when he finds out what happened. Guess where Tommy goes to drown his sorrows? Oh, how soon we forget the love of our life – Holly (Lucy Walters) – when a fine woman like Keisha (Alana “La La” Anthony) is in the picture. That’s right, Tommy goes to Keisha’s house! I must say I was shocked at what she tells Tommy about Tasha.
Towards the end of “Things Are Going to Get Worse,” Proctor tells Ghost something that shakes him to his core. Will he do what Proctor suggests? Can he be that kind of man? Desperate times sometimes call for desperate measures. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
