“I’m not here to judge your innocence, brutha; I’m here to save your life.” — Terry Silver
Seeking to put pressure on James “Ghost” St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick), the feds grab his known associates, including Dre (Rotimi Akinosho), Julio (J.R. Ramirez), and Keisha (Alana “La La” Anthony) in “The Kind of Man You Are.” If Cooper Saxe (Shane Johnson) and Mike Sandoval (David Fumero) really knew the kind of man Ghost is and the kind of people he surrounds himself with, they’d understand these guys aren’t going to provide any information that would lead to his conviction for the murder of Agent Greg Knox (Andy Bean).
Given how intimately acquainted AUSA Angela Valdes (Lela Loren) is with Ghost, you’d think she wouldn’t bother interrogating Keisha, although her motive becomes clear as “The Kind of Man You Are” progresses. Even though Angela asks Keisha questions she already knows the answers to, I’ll just mention the words “break spousal privilege” so I don’t give too much away. Just know it puts pressure on Tasha (Naturi Naughton) and Tommy (Joseph Sikora) once they learn what Angela wants to know. Is Angela that furious with Jamie for leaving her to go back to Tasha that she’s really going to let him be convicted of killing Knox? I can’t wait to hear what Kantos (Adam Huss), the former manager of Ghost’s nightclub Truth, might have to say if and when the Feds find him.
Attorney Joe Proctor (Jerry Ferrara) brings in Terry Silver (Brandon Victor Dixon) as second chair for Ghost’s trial but in spite of Silver’s success rate for “getting innocent guys off,” Ghost immediately butts heads with him. I understand why; Silver comes across as a know-it-all, arrogant man who doesn’t believe Ghost’s story about what happened the night he broke into Knox’s apartment. Dixon is an expert at conveying his character’s disbelief in his client, even to the point where I became as angry as Ghost despite knowing Power is a fictionalized television series.
Knox’s friend and “illegal CI” Bailey Markham (Lee Tergesen) wants nothing more than to clear Knox’s name by pointing the finger at Angela as the FBI mole. And even though he has a tape that could do just that, Saxe isn’t interested because it contradicts the Feds’ belief that Tommy is Ghost. Markham is so hell bent and determined to put Angela in jail and get Ghost convicted for Knox’s murder, I can’t wait to see the lengths he’ll go to in order to get what he wants. Were you as surprised as I was to find out who was on the other end of the phone in the bar scene?
I can’t believe how callous Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) is when it comes to his mother and father when talking to Tommy. “I don’t really care about helping her (Tasha) or my dad right now. I don’t even care if he goes away … the family isn’t that important to me.” Obviously, Kanan (Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson) is doing a good job of convincing “Riq” how unimportant the family is to both him and Ghost. The best part about Tariq’s conversation with Tommy is how compassionate Sikora comes across when Tommy does his best to relate to Riq. The kindheartedness Tommy displays in juxtaposition with his nefarious criminal activity is outstanding and shows Sikora’s immense amount of depth.
When Ghost talks to his daughter Raina (Donshea Hopkins) from jail, it is just plain heartbreaking. I can’t even imagine how hard it is for him when he finds out how upset she is by the newspaper photo. As a parent, I understand how difficult it is to know your child is suffering and not being able to do anything about it. The difference between how compassionate Ghost is with Raina and how stony he acts during the final scene with Silver shows how talented not only Hardwick is, but Dixon and Hopkins as well.
What did you think of “The Kind of Man You Are?” I have two questions; (1) Will Ghost go through with paying the blackmail ransom inmate Tony Teresi (William Sadler) demands to keep his mouth shut regarding what he knows about Ghost’s past and (2), will Ghost accept the deal Angela presents to him? Is he that desperate to keep Tasha, Tariq, and Raina safe? Hit me up on Twitter @SeasideTV or leave a comment below.
