But Jane has an even bigger problem; she’s smitten with the baby daddy, the handsome, rich Rafael (Justin Baldoni), with whom she has a past. Enter Rafael’s shrew of a wife, Petra (Yael Grobglas), and the fact that Rafael’s sperm sample was his last due to a bout with cancer. I can’t forget to mention Jane’s highly libidinous mom, Xiomara (Andrea Navedo), who had Jane out of wedlock, Rogelio (Jaime Camil), the father Jane doesn’t even know exists, and her “abuela” Alba (Ivonne Coll), who only speaks Spanish. Oh, cue the Latino narrator who remarks in a deep baritone, “Jane’s life was now the stuff of telenovelas.” Sounds ridiculous, right? Right, but oh so much fun.
What sets Jane the Virgin apart from other comedy series is how charming it is. It is also extremely funny and doesn’t take itself too seriously. There are a number of twists and turns in each episode that are revealed quite slowly, which is part of what makes Jane the Virgin so much fun to watch. As a matter of fact, it is pure camp, and does a great job of embracing its telenovela roots. The acting is stellar, especially Rodriguez. Watch out for this one. She’s going to make a name for herself with this series.
In next week’s episode, “Chapter Three,” Jane (Gina Rodriguez) considers making a life-changing decision about her and Michael’s relationship. Alba is disappointed in Xo’s handling of Rogelio, so Alba takes it into her own hands to stop Rogelio from trying to see Jane. Meanwhile, Jane continues to question whether Petra will be a fit mother, and her pursuit of the truth leads to an unexpected change in their relationship. Michael’s on-going murder investigation leads to an unexpected discovery.
Justin Baldoni also stars, and Brad Silberling directs the episode, which was written by Meredith Averill.
Jane the Virgin airs Mondays at 9/8c, only on The CW.
