“Speak No Evil” doesn’t lose traction after the shocking end to last week’s season premiere, “See No Evil,” during which Mara (Emily Rose) shoots Nathan (Lucas Bryant). I knew he wasn’t dead…ok, so I was worried a little, but the writers can’t kill Nathan. They just can’t. As “Speak No Evil” begins, Duke (Eric Balfour) finds Nathan but is oblivious to Nathan’s injury because he’s so consumed with finding Jennifer (Emma Lahana). But, if you recall in the season four finale, “The Lighthouse,” Jennifer stopped breathing inside the cave.

Smithsonian Channel and Tangled Bank Studios Present – Mass Extinction: Life at the Brink
It’s a mystery on a global scale: five times in Earth’s past, life has been nearly extinguished, the vast majority of plants and animals annihilated in a geologic instant. What triggered these dramatic events? And what might they tell us about the fate of our world? The program joins scientists around the globe in search of answers to two of the most dramatic mass extinctions: the “K/T Extinction,” which wiped out the dinosaurs, and “The Great Dying,” which 250 million years ago annihilated nearly 90% of all Earth’s species. These early mass extinctions could hold clues for what may be happening today.

Witches of East End – “Smells Like King Spirit” Recap. Dark Side of Destiny.
Witches of East End has a habit of balancing the darker elements of its story lines regarding the cursed Beauchamp family with some lighthearted moments. Yeah, not so much in “Smells Like King Spirit,” where the clear and present danger of Frederick (Christian Cooke) and Tarkoff’s (James Marsters) mission takes a sinister turn.

Forever – “Pilot” Advance Review. Sherlock Holmes Meets Indiana Jones with Bond Style.
Why does everything sound better with a deep, lush British accent? Admittedly, I was drawn to the premise of Forever because I’ve got a twisted fascination with immortality, the supernatural, and a good mystery. But after learning Ioan Gruffudd (pronounced: Yo-An Griffith) would play the lead character, Dr. Henry Morgan, I was in! Forever is a fun, new kind of drama with flare. It’s Sherlock Holmes meets Indiana Jones with a pinch of James Bond mixed in. There is mystery, intrigue, murders, antiques, and of course, a bit of danger.

Gotham – “Pilot” Spoiler-Free Advance Review. A Fish, a Cat and a Penguin.
When Fox first announced Gotham would be on its 2014 fall schedule, I had my doubts if the show could work without a main hero. Sure, Smallville didn’t have Superman and survived for 10 seasons but the show still had Clark Kent (Tom Welling) and he wielded most of Superman’s powers. So, can there be a Gotham without Batman? Based on the pilot, the answer appears to be yes.

The Strain – “Loved Ones” Retrospective. The Chosen One.
The saying, ‘we hurt the ones we love the most,’ rings loud and clear in “Loved Ones.” Why do the newborn strigoi go after their family first? Is it our innate need to be close to those who love us when we aren’t feeling our best? While this hasn’t been fully explained, I think we all seek out the familiar when we are sick, hurt, or scared. Unfortunately, the people we care for the most are the ones that also suffer the most.

Haven — “See No Evil” Review. Monkey See. Monkey Shoot. Monkey Taser?
Haven is back but this is a much darker Haven than we last saw in the season four finale “The Lighthouse.” “See No Evil” is a shocking and enthralling season premiere. Haven ups the ante for this season. Of note, there are several clues from last season that play a major role in what goes down in the season five premiere “See No Evil.” And we will definitely see plenty of dastardly deeds happening courtesy of Mara (Emily Rose).

Conf Call: HAVEN Season 5 – Emily Rose and Lucas Bryant Talk About Love Suckers, Pancakes, and Lots of Steam
This was the most fun I’ve had on a call in a long time. Emily Rose and Lucas Bryant have such great banter during this call especially fielding things like being called “a love sucker” and the hilarious exchange regarding Nathan and Audrey making “pancakes” last season. Apparently there will be more “pancakes” maybe some “waffles” and a whole lot of “steam” happening this season.

Red Band Society Series Premiere – “Pilot” Spoiler-Free Advance Review. A Coming of Age Dramedy.
Red Band Society takes its name from the red hospital bracelets the kids wear. The first half of the season premiere is very lighthearted and funny despite the seriousness of the show’s premise. There is plenty of drama as well and combined, it makes for a very entertaining, heartfelt, coming-of-age tale. I’m sure some people won’t want to watch a show with such a maudlin topic but they’ll be missing out on a wonderful show that takes you on a journey with each character as they grow and learn about themselves. Red Band Society is a unique show with the potential to become a terrific new series for Fox. By the end of “Pilot,” you find yourself wanting to know what makes the characters tick.
