It seems like years since last season’s finale but upon watching the season three premiere, it feels like no time has passed at all. What a blast of an episode! It is nothing short of phenomenal.
If you recall, Bo’s (Anna Silk) Dark side emerged last season. Now, for the past three weeks, she’s been indulging in a new-found life as a nihilist, blithely throwing around her Succubus powers and smashing every Fae law to the ground. Her faithful group of friends doesn’t know what to do with her, but Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) throws her in the Dal Riata for an intervention of sorts—the team decides to send her to Hecuba prison. It’s probably not the best place to put her, but at least she’s able to help the other prisoners. Something good’s gotta come out of the bad, right? Sort of like a silver lining. That’s the optimist in me talking.
Now that Dyson’s love for Bo has returned, I can’t wait to see some action between the two. What did you think of the tussle they had? I find their ability to go head to head with each other-without one necessarily overpowering the other-exhilarating. Seeing Bo laugh as if she doesn’t have a care in the world is disconcerting, but I also like that she seems to be having fun. (Last season, she was sometimes overly serious.) Now that her Dark side is coming out to play, and she remains unaligned, what should we be seeing from her throughout the season? Plenty of mayhem, to be sure.
“Caged Fae” sees the return of Vex (Paul Roger Amos), who is now serving as a sidekick to Dyson and Kenzi (Ksenia Solo). His Fae power will come in handy but I still find him as annoying as I did last season, and I don’t expect that to change. Still, I’ll give Vex a chance since he proved himself useful by saving the lives of beloved characters in last season’s finale.
Perhaps it’s the passage of time but “Caged Fae” feels darker. Wanblee, an ancient, rare Fae, are being bred by a sadistic Warden (Sarain Boylan) who turns out to be a male Liderc, a Trickster Fae who’s impregnating the prisoners with “magical sperm.” It’s not as tantalizing as it sounds; the Warden is entertaining enough but more fascinating to me is the still developing relationship between Bo and Lauren (Zoie Palmer). Can Lauren be any more pining and whiney with Bo? The neediness is so clear in her eyes and it really puts me off (kudos to Palmer for keeping it real). I feel like Bo should go with either Lauren or Dyson—she really needs a strong ally, not just physically, but also emotionally, and, well, I love the Wolf in Dyson so I am biased. Being a human in a world of Fae automatically makes Lauren the weaker potential partner, and Bo doesn’t need that, does she?
So, Det. Hale (K.C. Collins) is the acting Ash now? I guess it had to be one of Bo’s allies. What works in his favor is how fair and impartial he can be. He’s the voice of reason to Kenzi and Dyson’s quick rush to action where Bo is involved. Hale’s measured reactions will serve the team well in future episodes. This has to be his best quality.
Now, we know there’s a way to strip Fae of their powers—the Ley lines. Funny thing, though—Bo doesn’t seem all that different without her powers. In fact, I couldn’t really tell much difference between a Fae-ful Bo and a Fae-less one. Perhaps I’m mistaken in seeing her as being primarily defined by her Succubus powers.
The best scene in “Caged Fae” is when Kenzi visits Bo in Hecuba prison in “a redneck wig” and a “Monster Truck thong.” Kenzi continues to prove she can bring on the stealth, planting an eye contact by kissing Bo and loudly proclaiming her faithfulness. Hilarious as hell.
By the way, did you see Dyson’s reaction when he sees Bo and Lauren kissing after the prison breakout? Here we go with the star-crossed lovers’ triangle!
My biggest concern? Just what did Kenzi sacrifice to get Dyson’s love for Bo back? She refuses to tell him what happened with the Norn. I’ll be staying tuned, and I hope you will, too!
