On the Red Carpet — American Horror Story: Freak Show Premiere Interviews

Hollywood, CA
In carny speak – Step right up, folks; step right up! Your Entertainment Corner attended the red carpet premiere for American Horror Story: Freak Show and we are bringing our interviews to you!
Not all red carpets are the same and we don’t always get to speak to the main actors/actresses of the series, but I did get a few interesting interviews.
First up, I talked to singer Melanie Martinez of NBC’s The Voice. Her new song “Carousel” is featured on the AHS: Freak Show promos. Martinez is a huge fan of American Horror Story and beyond excited that her song is being featured on one of her favorite shows. Looking uniquely adorable with her two-tone hair and blue lipstick, the young singer’s enthusiasm was quite endearing.
We talked with a new cast member, Rose Siggins who will play the character Legless Suzi. Siggins has never acted before and mentions how great the cast is on set with helping her understand the director’s lingo and vision. I’m very curious to see what Legless Suzi will bring this season. She says her character has “a past.”
As I geared up my camera phone for the next interview with John Carroll Lynch who plays Twisty the Clown, he commented the unique look of my phone. It’s the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom and it is one heck of camera phone to be sure. He said I was “raising the bar” with my high tech gadget. I’ve been a fan of Lynch for a while. I started off the group interview by saying how much I loved him in Crazy, Stupid, Love, but it was his role as a sadistic sheriff in Gothika that might have prepped him for this role of a demented looking clown in AHS: Freak Show. His answers are telling and I enjoyed his playfulness with his replies. Another reporter asked him if it was difficult for him to go to such a dark place with Twisty the Clown – his answer is honest and refreshing.
I was able to snag a quick interview with one of the executive producers and series writers Brad Falchuk. While he doesn’t go into much detail, he highlights what AHS: Freak Show is about. I asked him about the new characters, the so-called freaks of the freak show. He said they found the characters first and then wrote their scenes, which I think is fascinating. I asked if any other Hollywood big names have made inquiries about joining the show and he said getting Michael Chiklis was amazing.
One of the new cast members this season is Edward Gelhaus. He will be playing a younger version of Michael Chiklis’ character Wendell ‘Dell’ Toledo. They couldn’t have picked a better up and coming actor to be a young Chiklis. Gelhaus is charismatic and you can feel his enthusiasm for this role. I’m looking forward to seeing the evolution of young Dell Toledo into the vulnerable strong man.
Finally rounding out our night of interviews is the one and only Naomi Grossman. You will remember her from season two as the wild and unpredictable Pepper. While we don’t see Pepper much in the first episode, Grossman said you will be seeing more of the same zany Pepper we’ve grown to love. The dress she was wearing leaves little to the imagination so I can only imagine what she has in store for us this season.
American Horror Story: Freak Show feels much darker, if you can imagine, than previous seasons. Yes, season one was scary with its haunted mansion theme. Yes, season two was frightening with its torture filled asylum. Season three wasn’t as dark as I’d hoped it would be but it had its moments. Season four has an ominous feel to it because of the shadowy pasts of many characters and the unknown evil lurking about. I don’t think Twisty the Clown is the only dark force in Jupiter, FL.
Tune in to American Horror Story: Freak Show, Wednesdays at 10PM ET/PT, only on FX.
