What would you do if you were diagnosed with cancer? Cathy Jamison (Laura Linney) decided to ignore it last year and lived in a state of total denial. This year, however, she’s decided to face it head on while living life to the fullest as only Cathy can. She’s partying, drinking and smoking weed with husband Paul (Oliver Platt) and spending lots of time with brother Sean (John Hickey), who’s living in Marlene’s old house, trying to deal with Rebecca’s (Cynthia Nixon) pregnancy. “Bring it on,” says Cathy, as she enters an experimental clinical trial. And she’s not kidding.
Episode 1 of The Big C‘s second season, “Losing Patients,” sees Cathy seeking a second opinion, while son Adam (Gabriel Basso) heads into therapy. Speaking of Adam, he develops an unlikely relationship with Poppy (Parker Posey), an older woman. That relationship won’t last too long though, as Posey has only signed on for four episodes. Alan Alda will play Dr. Atticus Sherman, an oncologist Cathy meets, and Hugh Dancy takes on the role of Lee, a charming cancer patient, who befriends Cathy while in the experimental drug trial they’ve both entered. Gabourey Sidibe will also return this season as Andrea.
From Showtime’s press release: “This season, Cathy progresses from Denial to Anger on the grief cycle and will become an all-out warrior in the fight against her Stage 4 melanoma.”
The Big C returns to Showtime, Monday, June 27th at 10:30 pm ET/PT. Check out this teaser from Showtime via YouTube.
