San Diego Comic Con 2017
Star Trek Discovery Press Conference
Event Date: Saturday, July 22, 2017
Prior to their panel at this year’s San Diego Comic Con (SDCC), select cast members and executive producers of CBS’ Star Trek: Discovery spoke with press about the series premiere and their highly anticipated first season, including how the show would build upon the legacy of the original Star Trek series, and the progressive vision original show creator Gene Roddenberry developed.
Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green (Lt. Commander Michael Burnham), Jason Isaacs (Captain Gabriel Lorca), Doug Jones (Lt. Saru), Shazad Latif (Lt. Tyler), Mary Wiseman (Cadet Tilly), Anthony Rapp (Lt. Stamets), James Frain (Sarek), and Rainn Wilson (Harry Mudd), all of whom were present inside the SDCC press room. They were joined by executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Aaron Harberts, Gretchen J. Berg, Heather Kadin, and Akiva Goldsman.
Star Trek: Discovery takes place ten years before the original Star Trek series, which featured the much-beloved characters of Captain James T. Kirk and Spock exploring the universe on the USS Enterprise. As a prequel, there is much left unexplored and unestablished in space, and the crew on the USS Discovery aims to explore the vast universe, alien planets, and lifeforms within them.
Executive producers promise Star Trek Discovery will be more than nostalgia; however, the show will appeal to both newcomers and fans of the original series. Because of this promise, there have been numerous delays and complications with production. Executive producer Akiva Goldsman credits this to ensuring all the right technology and development were in place in order to create a final product worthy of bringing Star Trek back to television in 2017.
“It takes time to build the world we wanted to create,” said Goldsman. “We want the end product to be noteworthy and we are acutely aware of the legacy we are building upon.”
The show will also stay true to not only the legacy of Star Trek with plenty of the sci-fi favorites like space travel, new alien lifeforms, strange and unique creatures, phasers, and advance technology, but also in the spirit of diversity and inclusion that Star Trek is famous for.
“Now, [Star] Trek is needed more than ever,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman, referencing our current political climate. “It’s about what connects us and what we could become as a planet instead of what we are becoming.”
The pressure of the show’s success is more than just staying true to Gene Roddenberry’s vision; CBS is using Star Trek: Discovery to promote their video on demand (VOD) and live streaming service CBS All Access. The first episode will air on CBS Networks and the first two episodes will be available on CBS All Access for subscribers. All subsequent episodes of the show will air only on CBS All Access. CBS is hoping its service will compete with established on-demand and streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Go, among others. In terms of new and original and exclusive content, Star Trek: Discovery is the big ticket for CBS All Access. For more on this, check our previous post.
