MYTHBUSTERS RETURNS TO SCIENCE CHANNEL WITH
NEW TEAM ON NOVEMBER 15
(Los Angeles, CA) – MythBusters will explode back on to Science Channel this fall with all-new episodes and an all new-team. Brian Louden and Jon Lung, who earned the right to be called MythBusters by displaying killer build skills and science smarts during MythBusters: The Search, will showcase their awesome talents by building and executing new experiments involving rocket powered swords, exploding gas tanks, airbag disasters and more. The new 14-episode season of MythBusters will debut on Wednesday, November 15 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
“As evidenced by their amazing work on MythBusters: The Search, Brian and Jon are clearly superstars with a knack for building and executing creative and mind-blowing experiments,” said Marc Etkind, General Manager of Science Channel. “We couldn’t be more excited to bring the next generation of MythBusters to Science Channel.”
MythBusters made its television debut on Discovery Channel in 2003 and ended its fourteen-year run on the network in 2016. The series earned eight consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Reality Program from 2009-2016. The program fuses scientific method with gleeful curiosity and plain old-fashioned ingenuity to create a signature style of explosive experimentation.
Brian, who hails from Spring, Texas, is addicted to knowledge and whose curiosity and love of S.T.E.M. has guided him his entire life. Brian has a biology degree and extensive training and work in emergency medicine, he has done research at a body farm studying bacteria growth in human cadavers. He’s also been a drilling engineer in the energy business. At a young age, Brian built an air cannon out of PVC pipe and a small air compressor that could shoot hundreds of yards — quite an achievement until it exploded in the garage, putting a hole in the wall and a dent in his metal toolbox. His skills have vastly improved since with encouragement and knowledge from all his family and friends.
A native New Yorker, Jon is a trained engineer and a product designer. From the moment he was hired to work in his undergraduate wood and metal shop, he knew he had found his eternal happy place. Ten years later Jon has found a way to keep working with his hands, whether it is designing and building furniture or generating concepts, prototypes and tests as a product designer. On the off chance you cannot find him in the shop, you will most likely find him running around junkyards, searching for interesting bits and doo-dads.
MythBusters is produced for Science Channel by Beyond Productions. Rob Hammersley and John Luscombe are executive producers. For Science Channel, Wyatt Channell is executive producer.
TERRY O’QUINN TO HOST NEW SCIENCE CHANNEL SERIES
MYSTERIES OF THE MISSING
Series Premieres Saturday, August 26 at 10 p.m. ET/PT
(Los Angeles) – In this day and age of modern technology and surveillance monitoring almost every detail of our lives, it seems inconceivable to us that something or someone could just disappear off the face of the Earth. Now a new Science Channel series, MYSTERIES OF THE MISSING hosted by Emmy®-winning actor Terry O’Quinn (Lost, The Patriot), pursues plausible explanations to some of the most infamous disappearances of all time. The series premieres Saturday, August 26 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
MYSTERIES OF THE MISSING exposes the theories behind what happened on the fateful day of disappearances and what science can now tell us about what really transpired. Investigators, scientists, and experts use cutting-edge technology to decode the unexplainable and seek answers to some of the most puzzling unresolved cold cases in history. The first episode chronicles the biggest aviation mystery of the 21st century, Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, and attempt to determine how something so closely monitored could simply vanish.
“Terry O’Quinn knows a thing or two about planes that have mysteriously disappeared and gone lost,” said Marc Etkind, General Manager of Science Channel. “We’re thrilled to have him on-board for this series which takes a detailed scientific approach to trying to solve these fascinating and often shocking disappearances.”
“I’m very happy to be working with the Science Channel,” said Terry O’Quinn. “I’ve been a long-time fan of their programming and am proud to be a part of this intriguing show.”
The series features other prominent vanishing acts including the three Alcatraz escapees who managed to flee the island fortress in 1962; the Lost Roanoke Colony in North Carolina; the unexplained cause of a 1908 explosion in an extremely remote part of Siberia that is said to have been the equivalent of a thousand atom bombs; and the notorious Bermuda triangle, among others.
MYSTERIES OF THE MISSING is produced for Science Channel by Wall to Wall. Jeremy Dear and Fred Hepburn are executive producers for Wall to Wall. For Science Channel, Neil Laird is executive producer.
FORMER NASA ASTRONAUT MIKE MASSIMINO TO ANCHOR
SCIENCE CHANNEL’S PRIMETIME COVERAGE OF THE GREAT AMERICAN ECLIPSE ON MONDAY, AUGUST 21 AT 9 PM
Massimino Will Also Host New Series The Planets, Premiering The Following Evening, Tuesday, August 22 at 10 PM
(Los Angeles) – Former NASA Astronaut Mike Massimino, a veteran of two missions to the Hubble Space Telescope and four space walks, will host Science Channel’s GREAT AMERICAN ECLIPSE special airing Monday, August 21 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. In addition, Massimino will serve as guide to the definitive series on our closest neighbors in the solar system, THE PLANETS, premiering Tuesday, August 22 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
“Mike Massimino is a true hero of space exploration having risked his life to fix the Hubble Space Telescope,” said Marc Etkind, General Manager, Science Channel. “His dedication to furthering our understanding of the universe make him the perfect guide to take our viewers through the once-in-a-lifetime Great American Eclipse and to the farthest reaches of the galaxy in The Planets.”
“Even as a child staring into the sky, I was fascinated with what’s out there,” added Massimino. “And I’m excited to be sharing my lifelong passion for space exploration with Science Channel viewers.”
On, August 21, for the first time in 99 years a total solar eclipse will span the continental United States, the path of totality stretching from Oregon to South Carolina. Science Channel will be on the ground to capture the excitement with live coverage starting at 12 p.m. ET from Madras, Oregon and will continue throughout the day from other locations along the eclipse’s path. Science Channel will also be airing an eclipse preview special on Sunday, August 20 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. A Great American Eclipse wrap-up special airing Monday, August 21 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, featuring same-day eclipse footage, will be hosted Massimino. Massimino will anchor the network’s coverage from Charleston, South Carolina, one of the last land-based sites to see the eclipse.
Great American Eclipse will spotlight the NASA WB-57 eclipse project, which will observe the eclipse with two high speed fighter jets, each carrying infrared and visible light cameras taking high definition video. Also featured will be the Eclipse Ballooning Project, which will send high altitude balloons up in the air from about 25 locations across the total eclipse path, sending live video and images to NASA. This has never been done live, and certainly not across an entire continent.
Each of the eight, hour-long episodes of The Planets will take an in-depth look at Venus, Mars, the newly discovered Planet 9, Exoplanets and others. The series kicks off with an episode on Jupiter, which will look at recent discoveries by NASA’s Juno mission that reveal new secrets about this strange world that is more akin to a star than a planet. As scientists uncover what lies beneath Jupiter’s violent storms, our understanding of the solar system could change forever.
An astronaut, the first person to tweet from space, and now a New York Times bestselling author, Mike Massimino grew up a working class kid whose seemingly unreachable dream of becoming an astronaut and going to space was realized in an unlikely journey that was driven by determination and commitment and realized with hard work and humor. After two missions to the Hubble Space Telescope and four space walks to make critical repairs to the telescope, Mike is now the Senior Space Advisor to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, a Columbia University professor, an author, a media personality, and an in-demand speaker for audiences seeking a unique perspective on teamwork, innovation, and leadership from a down to earth spaceman.
