Special Two-Hour Premiere Surveys Ghost Towns from Around the World
(New York – February 27, 2019) – Science Channel kicks off a new season of its rock-solid engineering series, MYSTERIES OF THE ABANDONDED, with a special two-hour premiere that explores some of the world’s strangest ghost towns. Scouring the globe for obscure buildings and sites that were once thriving, but now just footnotes in history, the series returns for nine new episodes beginning Tuesday, March 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
The season premiere looks at decaying structures of forgotten ghost towns, each with its own unique story to tell. Among those visited is a village in Argentina where vacationers from Buenos Aires once flocked to for the salty, therapeutic waters of its lake. When a rare weather disaster in 1985 caused a dam to break, waters rose to 33 feet rendering the village uninhabitable, never to be rebuilt. Thurmond, West Virginia was a prosperous town during the heyday of coal mining in the New River Gorge, but now its buildings stand empty, though some look like they could still be in use. And Bodie, California, which resembles a set straight out of Westworld, was a once dangerous town that was built on the greed of the gold rush.
“When we started to research ghost towns we had no idea that there as many of these strange locations all over the world and the fact that they are as evocative as they are, it made perfect sense to put them all together into a two-hour special,” said Neil Laird, Executive Producer, Science Channel.
Other abandoned places visited during the new season are Berlin’s 1936 Olympic Village, built on land belonging to the Wehrmacht, Nazi Germany’s armed forces; Seville, Spain’s 1992 World’s Fair site that looks like a failed attempt to build a city of the future; and the Mare Island Shipyard, north of San Francisco, the first U.S. Navy base built on the Pacific Ocean, but sections of it are just a shell of its former self.
MYSTERIES OF THE ABANDONED is produced for Science Channel by Like a Shot Entertainment. Henry Scott is Executive Producer for Like A Shot. Neil Laird is Executive Producer for Science Channel.
