Murder Will Out. Review: Copper - "Better Times are Coming" 1

Maguire says goodbye to Mary Lockwood

Maguire (Kevin Ryan) is acting rather like a vigilante lately. He may be coming unhinged, and leaving Corky (Tom Weston-Jones) and O’Brien (Dylan Taylor) out of the loop will be his undoing. Why does he want the bullet from Mary Lockwood’s (Joanne Boland) body? Threatening the local coroner with bodily harm makes him seem the guilty party. Throughout “Better Times are Coming,” he’s one step ahead of Corky, causing Corky frustration and worry that his closest sidekick might not be on his side. What a shame, because these two men really need to have each other’s backs. Both of them have lost the women they loved, and being coppers gives them a convenient outlet for their passion and rage. I fear for Maguire—he’s broken and utterly lost, which is causing him to think and act in uncharacteristic ways or, at least, in a manner I didn’t expect from him. Even so, Corky will protect him at any cost, so great is his  loyalty to his friends. Ryan portrays Maguire in such a way that you can’t help but root for him in spite of his questionable behavior.

Eva (Franka Potente) feeds Corky a big fat lie about Maguire’s temper and how he used to hit Molly. The flippant manner in which she tells him this pissed me off! Is this her way of diverting Molly’s murder away from her and onto Maguire? How much lower can that evil wench sink? And, really, is she trying to turn Corky against everyone, especially his good friend? What redeems Eva is her concern for Annie (Kiara Glasco), who’s trying to convince her that she and Corky are sleeping together, acting like a dutiful housewife and wearing Corky’s wife’s clothes. When will Annie realize Corky has no sexual interest in young girls? Good thing Eva doesn’t believe it, because we know she’d do away with Annie without a moment’s hesitation. The time will come when murder will out, and when it does, I’ll be cheering.

Are Morehouse and Elizabeth becoming close?

It made me sad that there were no interactions between Elizabeth (Anastasia Griffith) and Corky in this week’s episode. After he threatened her last week, she still seems shaken and tells Morehouse (Kyle Schmid) she doesn’t want to talk about Corky. After the intimate moment they shared last week, will this be the start of a relationship between them? They both come from money and had similar upbringings so it’d be a natural pairing, albeit a boring one, because their chemistry is more like that of brother and sister. Recall her steamy sex scene with Corky, but that won’t happen again because of a surprising development. And, of course, Eva, that jealous bitch, will have something to say about it!

And, what of New York City burning down? O’Brien’s (Dylan Taylor) wife Sybil (Lara Jean Chorostecki) is still harping on that rumor, although it’s hardly such. Morehouse is using his growing friendship with Kennedy (Aaron Poole), a Southern radical who, along with others of like mind, plans to burn down the city if Abraham Lincoln wins the election. Morehouse doesn’t support the radicals so he thwarts the attempt. During his conversation with Corky, I wasn’t sure if he’d be willing to give him the details of the planned burning because of Elizabeth. But Morehouse will suffer a-plenty for wooing her. He’s not doing himself any favors by insinuating himself romantically into Elizabeth’s life.

Corky finds his long missing wife Ellen

Were you as surprised as I was to see Corky’s missing wife Ellen (Alex Paxton-Beesley) at Earle House, a cottage home for sick women? Seeing Corky with her, pleading with her to remember him, made me so sad, and even tearful. What a nice touch that he carries around a music box to remember her. Weston-Jones was heartbreaking in this scene; he’s such a natural. Maguire had been visiting her there, but who knows for how long. Corky only finds his wife because he was following Maguire. Why Maguire kept this a secret from Corky is a mystery. Is he trying to protect Corky, or is he hiding something? If he knew all along about Ellen’s whereabouts, his motives are, indeed, suspicious. With the season winding down, I expect some answers.
