Minority Report – “Pilot” Review. The Future Is Unclear.

If you are unfamiliar with the film Minority Report, it’s OK. The television series of the same name provides you with a brief overview of the film’s premise. In the film, three siblings with pre-cognitive abilities were used to stop crime before it happened. The series picks up where the film left off; the “precognitives” are older now and the initiative known as “Pre-Crime” no longer exists, allowing criminal activity to go back to the way it used to be. Now, when someone is murdered, police must gather evidence to solve the mystery – who the suspect is, where they are now, and why the victim was killed.

In the TV series, Minority Report is set in the year 2065. In a bustling and very technologically advanced Washington D.C., Dash (Stark Sands), a young man with visions of crimes, comes to the city to see whether he can stop a crime before it happens.

Minority Report has potential on becoming very interesting series. Meagan Good, who plays Det. Lara Vega, turns in a decent performance but her character teeters on the line of being overzealous. Perhaps the writers want us to think Vega is a naïve eager detective; if that’s the case, then Good’s performance hits the nail on the head. Vega tries (sometimes too hard) to prove herself to her somewhat pompous superior Will Blake, played ever so coolly by Wilmer Valderrama, but Vega’s hunger to prove she’s more than a pretty face gets the better of her. I want the writers and producers to stay away from showcasing too much of Good’s physical assets and focus more on her acting abilities.

Dash follows his chaotic visions and finds himself alone in the big city, trying to save an unknown woman from being murdered. But, he’s only one-third of the original Precognitives and without the others, his visions are nothing more than scattered premonitions, pieces of a bigger puzzle he is unable to solve. Sands gives a convincing performance, playing Dash with a sense of innocence and bewilderment. Dash, as well as the other Precognitives, has been sheltered most of his life so it’s natural for him to be curious about the world around him. The chemistry between Sands and Good’s characters seems almost non-existent but if you think about it, Dash and Vega are perfect strangers who meet under strange circumstances. They have an awkward tension between them which seems quite natural in the beginning stages of two people getting to know each other.

The drama aspect of the series premiere isn’t all that dramatic, for lack of a better word; however, the scenes that play out throughout “Pilot” set up what I hope will be a more intriguing season. The criminals put away for their “pre-crimes” begin to resurface and that is where the interesting part of Minority Report will shine going forward. The other Precognitives slowly come into the fold, starting with Dash’s fraternal twin brother Arthur (Nick Zano), who hasn’t been using his gift of foresight in the best possible way. Although, some may argue that financial gain isn’t a bad thing. Vega and Will have the requisite sexual tension, something Vega finds both annoying and uncomfortable in the work place. It seems like Dash has a harmless curiosity about Vega… at least for now. I have a sinking feeling Arthur may also have his eye on Vega, but this is a scenario too played out in so many shows, I can only hope the sibling rivalry over a girl won’t come to fruition.

I enjoyed “Pilot” and will continue to watch Minority Report to see if the episodes become more enthralling. I want to see more from Good. Her character Vega is so keen on pre-crime and stopping an event before it happens, but that is the issue with the visions from the Precognitives. They were visions of something that might happen; they aren’t proven fact. While the visions might aid in preventing crime, the old saying, “the future is not written in stone” immediately comes to mind.
