Mind your Ps and Qs. Review: Copper, S1 Ep 4, “The Empty Locket”
Air date: Sunday, September 9, 2012, 10/9C on BBC America
Rating:

There are people who will go to great lengths to get what they want, no matter the cost. Eva (Franka Potente) is a prime example. Why Molly (Tanya Fischer) bothers asking her about the locket–and why Eva’s keeping it from Corky (Tom Weston Jones)–is beyond me, but after some nagging Eva gives her the locket, telling her, “Remember, you’re my favorite scarlet and I wouldn’t want anything to come between us.” They may both work in a brothel but I wouldn’t mess with a man Eva’s in love with, especially Corky. And when Corky sees Molly wearing the locket, it makes him further intent on discovering the truth about his wife and daughter. The death of abortionist Mrs. Grindle is key to unlocking this mystery.

Corky tries to find out more about his wife’s locke

Thoughts/Observations:

I like the burgeoning relationship between Corky and Elizabeth (Anastasia Griffith). They’re worlds apart, yet they have an endearing admiration for each other. Elizabeth, for one, isn’t a stuffy wealthy socialite, and doesn’t talk down to Corky. When he admires her chess set, she says she’ll teach him how to play. There was some inkling of a spark there.

Oh, Annie (Kiara Glasco), what a precocious little thing you are. She’s not enjoying the high society life with Elizabeth; instead, she wants to go back and live with Eva at the brothel, which is no surprise. It’s a life she knows, what she was born into. Hearing her play the piano, singing “Mary had a little lamb, she kept it on a barge. When she took its bloomers off, its woolly dick got large” was a hoot. Elizabeth is hardly amused, but expecting a street-smart 10-year-old to adapt to sitting properly in a stiff dress and sipping Earl Grey tea with pinky finger raised may take quite some time. Witness Annie running straight to Corky, telling him how much she hates living with Elizabeth. I love how Corky kneels down to talk with Annie at eye level.

Elizabeth helps Annie become comfortable in her home

Sara (Tessa Thompson) is proving her mettle with men. Her pistol is practically an extra limb; I would be afraid of her. When Freeman’s (Ato Essandoh) uncle visits and says he wants Jasper (Ryan Allen) to get into boxing, Sara’s protective instincts kick in and she makes it clear she won’t allow it. She treats Jasper like a son, and I suspect it won’t be long before she fires that pistol.

The Morehouses are proving quite a likeable father/son team. From the first episode, I expected them to be at odds with Corky but they’ve supported him against Sgt. Sullivan (Ron White), who gave Corky quite a tongue lashing and struck down the investigation into Mrs. Grindle’s murder. If the Morehouses and Corky continue working together, theirs could be quite a powerful alliance. The elder Morehouse turning in the bishop was awesome.

Seeing Miss Lockwood (Joanne Boland) with the ledger was surprising. The fact that Corky didn’t suspect her at all testifies to her complex nature (though he does have tunnel vision where his wife and daughter are concerned). On the face of it, she’s more than just a schoolteacher. With that ledger in hand, she could do some serious damage.

When Herr Schwarz told Corky his wife pawned her locket to feed her daughter, I believed him. I guess Maguire (Kevin Ryan) was worried about Corky becoming obsessed with his wife and wanted to “close the case,” so to speak. I thought that was a comradely thing for Maguire to do.

Maguire moping over Molly

I sort of cringed when Annie told Eva Molly and Elizabeth both like Corky. Unbeknownst to Annie, this contributes to a shocking development. I’m still reeling from it.

Next week promises to be another ace episode. What will happen between Corky and Elizabeth when she hires him to provide security at her fundraiser? More sparks flying, perhaps?
