“Don’t fret Manny, I got a feeling; your luck’s gonna change real soon.” – Xylda
At the risk of sounding cliché, I’m going to quote the lyrics from a famous song by Ray Parker Jr. “If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call?” Well, it ain’t the Ghostbusters because the ‘something strange’ in this week’s episode, “Sexy Beast,” is a living, breathing, man-hungry (literally) “succubus.” Talk about man-eater…sheesh.
Each episode of Midnight, Texas reveals more and more about the fraying veil between the living and hell, which coincidentally (or not) is drawing more supernatural creatures to Midnight. In “Sexy Beast,” our “Midnighters” — Manny (François Arnaud), Creek (Sarah Ramos), Olivia (Arielle Kebbel), Lem (Peter Mensah), Fiji (Parisa Fitz-Henley), Bobo (Dylan Bruce), Joe (Jason Lewis), and Chuy (Bernardo Saracino) — must figure out how to stop a ravenous succubus before she kills again. A pretty blonde named Gina (guest star Taylor Black) is making guys blush and gush…blood, that is. Her voracious appetite for literal bad boys is causing a major disruption that might bring the police sniffing around Midnight. Naughty boys beware.
Interesting Things
Manny has a talk with his Grandma Xylda (Joanne Camp) about his continued presence in Midnight. And while she tries to reassure him, the frightening voicemail he gets from the mysterious Hightower (not seen) makes Manny more than a little anxious.
Olivia is a secretive person and her side job as a gun for hire is showcased in “Sexy Beast.” We also learn a bit more about Olivia’s dark past and the terrible things that happened to her. Knowing what Olivia’s been through, I can see why she’s a tough egg to crack. She’s been so hurt by people who are supposed to protect you from being abused like that. I don’t blame Olivia one bit for being so guarded
I love Olivia and Lem’s relationship. The fact that he accepts her for who she is and vice versa speaks volumes. She’s done bad things and he’s a vampire that’s killed more than his fair share of people. I’m not saying I condone or excuse the killing and stuff, but Olivia seems to be doing vigilante type work (sort of Robin Hood style – steal from the rich to give to the poor, except she goes after people that have wronged others) and Lem doesn’t kill for sport as he did when he first became a vampire. It doesn’t faze Lem one bit when he helps unload Olivia’s bags and finds she’s brought her “work home” with her. Nothing says love like allowing your partner to water-board another person in your bathroom. I’m sure Ross Wheeler (Eli Goodman) wished he’d never crossed paths with Olivia or her demented father (not seen).
Manny and Creek’s relationship is heating up – hello shower scene. Let’s hope Creek doesn’t let her father’s (Bob Jesser) overprotective insecurities rub off on her. It’s enough that her little brother Conner (John-Paul Howard) is trying to keep tabs on Manny’s whereabouts when he should be minding his own business.
Speaking of Conner, his run-in with Gina probably scared the shit out of him. But it’s what Gina says, “He deserves it…” that troubles me. The succubus “feed on men who cause pain.” I wonder who Conner has hurt. The plot thickens.
Fiji looks amazing in that little black dress but it’s all for naught when Bobo stands her up. Nonetheless, it looks like these two besties will be sharing much more than dinner. The final scene of “Sexy Beast” gives the episode’s title a new meaning. I know I’m not the only one who let out a “finally” when these two lock lips. Hopefully, they will be able to transition from best friends to lovers without any issues. Although with Aubrey’s (Shannon Lorance) ghost still hanging around town, who knows what might happen.
Joe and Chuy are hiding something. It’s bad enough Joe hasn’t told anyone else, other than the Rev (Yul Vazquez) about the veil, but with all the recent events, things are getting a bit out of hand. What’s more curious is Chuy’s comment, “It’s happening; the veil is affecting supernaturals. What if we can’t fight the pull? What if I can’t?” Hmm… what is Chuy, exactly? He’s not just a fierce and fabulous nail technician, that’s for damn sure.
Overall
“Sexy Beast” is intriguing and deadly fun! The more I learn about Midnight, Texas and its inhabitants, I crave…no, need…no, want more. Hell, all of it! The succubus seemed unable to control her hungry no matter how many men she killed. I’m wondering what other supernaturals will be popping in for a visit to Midnight. And let’s not forget there is a terrifying demon after Fiji.
I’m very curious about bullet wound and the “scam” his Grandma Zylda pulls. I’m sure the mysterious Hightower (not shown) will be making an appearance real soon. Let’s hope that luck Xylda mentions follows suit.
