“I have abilities and I think you do too; that you can change the physical world around you with your intentions, or your emotions. I’m a witch, and you are too.” – Aunt Mildred
Ok, perhaps my quip of “Burning Love” is a little mean given what happens to a certain young man in this penultimate episode, “Riders on the Storm,” but the phrase also pertains to a certain demon whose name is Colconnar (not seen) by the way, who has the serious hots for the town’s favorite witch, Fiji (Parisa Fitz-Henley). As a sand storm rolls in hard and fast, and wraiths stalk the streets of Midnight, things are about to take a frightening turn for our beloved “Midnighters.”
“Riders on the Storm” provides some back story on how Fiji ended up in Midnight. After an incident at college, Fiji decided she needed to get away and headed to Midnight to visit her Aunt Mildred (Bellina Logan). The casting director couldn’t have picked a better actress to play Fiji’s bewitching Aunt. Logan exudes a charm that pulls you in, and gives a performance that is so convincing. The conversation she has with Fiji to explain why strange things are happening sort of reminded me of when Hagrid told Harry Potter he was a wizard (see the quote above).
We learn a deep, dark secret from Fiji’s past that explains why she’s been a tad hesitant on the love front. When Fiji first arrived in Midnight, Jeremy (Ryan McCartan) accepted her for who she is – no judgment, and when they finally were ready to consummate their relationship, things got hot…like, on fire hot. Of course, Fiji thinks it’s her fault but if you listen to the guttural sounds Jeremy makes they seem almost demonic. Could Colconnar be responsible for what happened back then? A jealous demon makes for a very bad time for anyone trying to get close to Fiji. Someone please warn Bobo (Dylan Bruce).
Manny (François Arnaud), along with Joe (Jason Lewis) and the Rev’s (Yul Vazquez) help, tries to dig up the remains of an ancient Shaman, Catori (guest star David Midthunder), who sealed the veil millennia ago. With the grave digging being less than fruitful, the gang regroups to seek shelter to ride out the storm. Manny and Fiji pool their collective powers to find a way to get answers but the combined “curse with an ancient witch’s spell” to summon the Shaman proves to have a deadly side effect.
Am I the only one who gasped when Mr. Snuggly (voiced by Joe Smith) makes the ultimate gesture? I know he’s an ornery feline but dang it, I like Mr. Snuggly’s snark and attitude. But, it isn’t his time to go. Of course, it isn’t Manny’s time either. Don’t worry; it’s not what you think. Let’s just say, death doesn’t become either of them.
The surprising aspect of “Riders on the Storm” is the reason why Colconnar wants Fiji so desperately. “I’m a virgin witch, a powerful virgin witch and that’s why it wants me.” Wow; I mean, wow! As beautiful as Fiji is, to hear her say “I’m a virgin” shocked me but also didn’t surprise me. She’s not one to give her love so freely, but I think that also has to do with what happened to Jeremy. Something like that will scar you for life. Can you imagine going through what Fiji did? It was simply traumatic! It’s like, ‘I know my vagina is hot but damn! I digress.
Interesting Things
Lem (Peter Mensah) and Olivia (Arielle Kebbel) aren’t quite back together but I have hope after she tells him, “Despite everything that happened, I love you.” That’s a good thing. All the silver she’s wearing, not so much, but baby steps, right? I mean, a vampire whom you’ve been quite intimate with throws you across the room — a girl’s got to protect herself.
When Creek (Sarah Ramos) lays down by Manny’s side after the summoning ritual, it gave me pause. If that’s not true love, I don’t know what is.
Overall
“Riders on the Storm” is a powerful episode that gives us so much to look forward to in the upcoming season finale. Do you know the identity of the masked man haunting Fiji? All I can say is Colconnar better watch out because Fiji is not just a powerful virgin witch, she is a fierce and loyal woman who will stop at nothing to save her friends.
