Air Date: Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 9/8c on Fox
RATING:
“So I’ve decided to give up on women and put all that energy into… tomatoes.” – Nick
“Tomatoes” is one of the funnier episodes of New Girl to date. I just about laughed at every gag, line and character. Of course, I knew Jess (Zooey Deschanel) would have to break up with Russell (Dermot Mulroney) at some point, and we’ve reached it. I can’t say I’m not disappointed because I am. “You want me to treat you like my ex-wife, who I hate?” I was truly hoping Mulroney would last at least a few more episodes. But, if he stuck around that would prove difficult for Jess and Nick (Jake Johnson) to discover the “passion” they have for one another. As I’ve been saying for a while now, those two kids belong together and I think we’re getting closer to them realizing how great they would be together. It’s about damn time!
Observations and thoughts:
I cannot fathom how Cece (Hannah Simone) could ever think Schmidt (Max Greenfield) wouldn’t take her at her work and date her roommate Nadia (Rebecca Reid). He’s a douche bag; he’ll do just about anything you tell him to just to prove he’s brave enough (or stupid enough) to do it. But what I really can’t get over is Schmidt’s ability to ease right into another situation with another woman when he’s so hung up on Cece. You know there’s no way he’d ever stop thinking about her or wanting to be with her. And hello! They just had an I-might-be-pregnant-scare like five minutes ago. There’s no way he’d move on from that. I wasn’t buying that story arc, but it does provide major laughs. Nadia is batshit crazy.
Winston (Lamorne Morris) and Shelby (Kali Hawk) are boring. Sorry, I have to say it. I couldn’t care less about a couple than them. I’m with Nick on this one. “You know what I don’t care about? Shelby.” I’m tired of hearing Winston talk about her. It’s annoying and no longer cute or funny. Besides, I miss the bromance between Nick and Winston. They had a lot of funny moments together and we don’t see those anymore. Who doesn’t miss an opportunity to laugh at Nick in his miserable state? Winston’s the best person to make fun of him but he’s too busy with Shelby to do that.
“Are you talking about Mickey Mouse?” Did anyone else laugh so hard they almost pissed themselves when Nadia starts raving about “McMouse!” to Schmidt? “Why don’t you get in your space ship like McMouse?” I couldn’t hear most of what she was saying because I got caught up in the moment. Then, there’s the #McMouse hashtag that showed up on screen during their scene. It was all too much!
I would like to comment on Ouli (Jeanne Tripplehorn) hugging Jess while naked. It’s weird and I’m surprised Ouli doesn’t think so. Who does that? You don’t hug your ex-husband’s girlfriend while you’re in the buff! And Jess is such a good, sweet girl that she has no clue how to handle the situation. Jess makes jokes about everything to take the severity out of the situation and I think it leads her to never being taken seriously. Hmm… I think I may have just uncovered something profound about Jess.
Oh, and yes, Mulroney and Tripplehorn arguing in the restaurant leads to some serious heat between their characters. It’s refreshing to see these professionals pulling off a somewhat sexy/serious moment with Deschanel singing a hit 80s tune in the background. I think the writers are onto something here.
Funny lines:
Nadia to Schmidt about his sex noises: “I hear you make sex to Cece once. You sound like dog being stepped on.”
**
Nadia: “I like his face. I want to punch, punch, punch!”
**
Schmidt: “So fine. I’ll go out with the hot Russian model whose ancestors probably burned down my ancestors’ village.”
**
Nick: “Get outta here you sky rats! Go back to hell where you came from!”
**
Winston to Nick: “Look at yourself! You look like one of those guys that crawls outta the grave in the Thriller video.”
**
Nick in his farmer voice, pitchfork held toward Winston: “I want you to git!”
Winston: “Seriously?”
Nick: “I want you to git off my farm.”
Winston: “This is a little weird man.”
Nick: “You used to be my best friend, now I don’t know ya!”
Winston: “Talk to yourself, man.”
Nick: “Now git!”
**
Schmidt to Cece about why he’s in the hospital: “Yeah, um, this is embarrassing. I broke my penis.”
**
Schmidt: “Then there was this other moment when I was watching myself, watching myself. I think I finally understand what the Tree of Life is about. Then, I can’t be certain of this, but I’m almost positive that Nadia’s vagina contains a right angle.”
**
Jess: “They’re not pajama outfits! They’re pajamas!”
**
Nick: “And if you don’t like looking at my face, Jess… then look at my ass!”
Jess and Nick’s jiggling ass argument has to be the highlight of “Tomatoes.” I’ve never laughed so hard in my life. Just when I thought the ridiculousness couldn’t be topped, it is. I may have failed to mention Nick’s crazy antics with his tomato plant, but I haven’t forgotten the impact of his foolishness on my senses. He’s definitely gone off the deep end. Johnson is fast becoming one of my favorite comedic actors. His outrageous behavior seems effortless and he brings a special something to the cast of New Girl with his hilarious portrayal of Nick. I think I may want more farmer Nick in the future. Just saying.
