Kidnapping, torturous murder, panic, and stolen kisses—“The Hour of Death” gives us an exciting episode that will surely keep your mind reeling and pulse racing.

Kidnap, Murder, and Stolen Kisses. Review: Grimm, S2, “The Hour of Death” 1

Hank restrains Nick from further assaulting their suspect in a kidnapping case.

A very grumpy Nick (David Giuntoli) and his somewhat untrusting partner Hank (Russell Hornsby) must solve a kidnapping case before Nick’s reputation as an empathetic Grimm comes undone by a vigilante Wesen killer, claiming to be a Grimm as well, who murders two suspects. What thrills me about this episode is the profound tension between Hank and Nick. Hank seems to be more sympathetic toward Wesens now that he’s learning more and more about the history of Nick’s ancestors. In “The Other Side,” Hank learned one of Nick’s ancestors nearly wiped out an entire species of docile turtle-like Wesen, and that seemed to be a tipping point for Hank.

After witnessing Nick’s anger unleashed on a kidnapping suspect, Hank’s statement to Nick is actually quite telling: “Maybe you’re wrong this time, Nick. Maybe it was his ex-girlfriend in the photo. I mean, we were looking at photos of Donna Reynolds (actress name) all this time. Just because he’s a Wesen doesn’t mean he’s guilty, right? He could’ve run from you because he knew you were a Grimm.”

Where’s is Hank’s loyalty to his partner? He’s not even giving Nick the benefit of the doubt. He has no idea what Nick goes through on a daily basis, wondering if every Wesen he sees is good or bad or out to kill him. Actually, I’m a little appalled at, and even feel somewhat betrayed by, Hank’s lack of trust when he assumes Nick is the one who viciously tortures their suspect. Nick feels compelled to explain himself but to Hank’s credit, he realizes there is no way the crossbow Nick is holding could have branded the heinous “G,” an ancient symbol for Grimms, into the deceased suspect’s torso.

Juliette doesn’t take too kindly to Nick’s complaint about having to sleep on the couch.

Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch) is no longer the same caring and loving person we came to know and love in season one. Since her cat scratch coma ordeal, she’s seems a bit more curt. Her explanation to Cpt. Sean Renard (Sasha Roiz) over an impromptu cup of coffee sums it up – Nick remembers her and their life together while she’s still trying to figure it out. You can see she’s struggling with her emotions when she begins to fidget and then leaves abruptly. Sean’s burgeoning obsession with her is becoming more pronounced as he boldly goes to her house returning her sunglasses, and then leans in and steals a kiss. Yes, he KISSES her! I was beside myself with giddy delight. As much as I love Nick, I have a major crush on the mysterious Sean Renard, the half-blood royal prince. The dichotomy of this love triangle fascinates me as more facets to Sean’s history seem to be deeply rooted in Nick’s own ancestry.

Does anyone else think something is awry with Sgt. Franco (Robert Blanche)? He’s very obliging to Sean but that could just be his nature as a dedicated police officer. I have a sneaking suspicion, however, that Sgt. Franco either knows about Wesens or is one. Just throwing it out there.

I thoroughly enjoyed the case this week. A vigilante Grimm running amok in Portland killing Wesen—good or bad—raised the suspense and intrigue ten-fold. I was mistaken in my tweet last night when I stated I thought this rogue Grimm was possibly Nick’s estranged mother, Kelly (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). Boy, was I wrong! The Grimm, or shall I say wanna-be Grimm, transforms into a Wesen that shocks and intrigues me. I love the variety of Wesen the writers come up with and hope they’ll continue to bring us more diverse creatures that don’t have a specific, relatable human world species such as canines or reptiles.

And with only two episodes remaining this year (meaning the show will go on holiday hiatus), I can’t wait to see what cliffhanger they’ll leave us with to salivate over during the holiday season.

Judy Manning

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.
