“You’re only as sick as the secrets you keep.” – Jackie
Against medical advice, Jackie (Edie Falco) leaves rehab because her daughter Grace (Ruby Jerins) is wearing eyeliner. What the hell? As with everything else in her life, Jackie chooses not to deal, instead using Grace’s makeup as an excuse to walk away from the only thing that will probably save her life. I don’t understand that. Jackie is a smart woman who says she wants to get better, but doesn’t use the one tool that will help her. I guess she’s not really ready.
Thoughts and Observations:
As Jackie leaves rehab, I love the juxtaposition of Charlie (Jake Cannavale) throwing a roll of toilet paper with his phone number on it at Jackie’s head as he simultaneously gives her the finger. I think Charlie may be the one person Jackie stays in touch with.
Before going to All Saints, Jackie stops at Grace’s school where she has a nun bring Grace outside. Jackie may think acting more like a concerned mother will draw Grace closer, but forcing her to remove her make-up before going back inside is not the way to go about it. All it does is push Grace farther away. Jackie has a lot to atone for, not the least of which are her addiction and affair with Eddie (Paul Schulze). I understand children need rules; they ‘tell’ kids their parents love them. But, Jackie is getting a late start with Grace. Let’s hope it works out before Grace gets into serious trouble. Jackie has good intentions but wow, is Grace going to be pissed when she sees what Jackie does to her white board! I would be too, if I were Grace’s age.
Jackie is having a hard time dealing with her emotions at work. One minute she’s up and the next, she’s down. I was surprised at Jackie’s reaction to a female patient who is in incredible pain although I, myself, was cringing from the awful moaning and groaning sounds coming from the woman. Usually, Jackie is the first person to jump right in but this time, her anxiety stops her cold. She should have listened to her therapist (Laura Silverman) and stayed in rehab. The usually strong and efficient Nurse Jackie is a quivering bundle of nerves. I like that Dr. O’Hara (Eve Best) sends her out of the room before anyone can notice. O’Hara isn’t thrilled about Jackie leaving rehab, but she always goes to the ends of the earth to protect her friend. I love friends like that.
I always get a good laugh when Coop (Peter Facinelli) is in a scene. Poor thing doesn’t realize his peers love to tease him and make jokes at his expense. I suspect that’s what’s going on when no one notices he’s shaved his goatee. Then again, Thor (Stephen Wallem) didn’t even know Coop had a goatee! Or so he says. *giggle*
Cruz (Bobby Cannavale) is all about “efficiency” at All Saints. At Coop’s suggestion, he asks Jackie what she thinks about “mandatory time limits.” I totally cracked up over what Coop says about her.
Coop: “Oh come on. It’s the first time you’ve had your hair longer in what…like 15 years? You know, it’s what we like about you. You’re like a cat; you don’t give a shit. Same scrubs, same hospital, same job for 20 years. So we make some changes…get Jackie on board, then we get them all [the nurses] on board. Look at me, goatee, no goatee. I’m fluid like that. Changes are good. What? I’m being nice.”
Coop doesn’t have a clue he’s hurt Jackie’s feelings, causing her to go on a crying jag. Really, Jackie? I sure didn’t expect that reaction! “So, now I’m going to feel stuff?” she asks O’Hara. Would it be that awful to be in touch with how you feel, Jackie? “The last time I cried at work I was 27.” Well, maybe that’s the problem. I think Jackie has lost touch with everything real in her life, beginning with her emotions.
Jackie is tested when Kelly (Gbenga Akinnagbe) gives her stolen Fentanyl patches as a welcome back gift. On top of that, Eddie informs her he’s told Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) about their affair. I was so afraid Jackie would give in and use the patches but happily, she doesn’t. Maybe she’s serious about getting better after all. Did she have to narc on Kelly, though? And then she warns him before he’s “taken off the floor in cuffs.” It looks like Jackie is trying to do the right thing although she compensates by still being a bud to her friend.
Zoey (Merritt Wever) tells Lenny (Lenny Jacobsen) she wishes he could be someone else for just 24 hours every few weeks. I think a lot of women feel that way about their boyfriends/spouses but they certainly don’t tell them! Why hurt your man’s feelings like that? But Lenny’s feelings don’t appear to be hurt. As a matter of fact, he doesn’t even care when Zoey flirts with the sexy cop who comes to arrest Kelly, which, by the way, is hysterical! Wever sure can play the seductress when she wants to! Sometimes, I think Lenny just doesn’t have a clue. I can’t make up my mind about how serious Zoey is. Is she planning to cheat, or are she and Lenny headed for a break-up?
Holy crap! O’Hara doesn’t know who the father of her baby is! How many men has she slept with?! At least she knows the baby is a boy, courtesy of the hand-held ultrasound Cruz gives Jackie to test out. I know, it’s all about efficiency, Dr. Cruz.
