Review: Haven, S3, Ep. 302 – “Stay”
Air Date: Friday, Sept 28, 2012, 10/9c on Syfy
Rating:
There’s nothing like drama and intrigue before you finish your morning coffee. With the sun illuminating a beautiful morning, Audrey (Emily Rose) tells Duke (Eric Balfour) what her abductor said —she “loved the Colorado Kid,”—but tension mounts when a strange noise comes from behind the corner. Thankfully, it’s only Nathan (Lucas Bryant), who seems a bit perturbed at seeing Duke so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with the woman they both seem to have deep feelings for. There is no mistaking the look Nathan gives Duke. It’s the look of ‘game on.’
There is a lot of contention lingering in the air, especially surrounding Duke. Not only does Nathan have qualms about him, Dwight (Adam Copeland) doesn’t seem too keen on helping Duke find what he’s looking for. I found it strange that Dwight actually does help Duke but I think he has his own reasons. Dwight has what seems like an obligatory connection with the Teague brothers, Dave (John Dunsworth) and Vince (Richard Donat), who Duke humorously refers to as “Bartles. James.” But I’d like to know the answer to the question Duke asks Dwight—just how long has Dwight been cleaning up after “the troubled?” I love the subtle humor and sometimes not so subtle sarcasm peppered into each episode. Neither detracts from the drama or tension of what’s going on; actually, they kind of enhance it. As an aside, I think the shorter haircut on Dwight is hot. It makes him much more attractive. And I’m not quite sure how I feel about Duke’s longer locks but I love Balfour, so I’ll let this one slide…for now.
Observations:
The Teague brothers put on airs like they want to help Duke and Dwight, but these sneaky brothers are hiding so much more. The kidnapper is using a bolt gun to kill people and it’s got the brothers shaking in their boots. This mystery just got juicier. I am salivating at the notion of this mystery unfolding. I want to know how well Vince knew Lucy (who is now Audrey) 27 years ago. What are they hiding about the Colorado Kid?
***
“Stay” presents us with the very strange case of Tor (Adrian G. Griffiths), a single father whose “trouble” seems to turn animals into humans. While the case was quite interesting, it didn’t lend much to the ongoing mystery of who kidnapped Audrey; nor did it provide leads to the identity of “the Hunter” mentioned in a message that was written inside the coffin from last week’s episode, “301”. What this case does do is show Audrey’s reluctance to commit to anything at the moment, especially when Duke finds clues to who or what “The Hunter” is. I don’t know what this will do for her budding, but quite fragile, relationship with Nathan but it doesn’t look good.
***
There’s a new shrink in town and her name is Dr. Claire Callahan (Bree Williamson). I was a bit surprised when I learned there was going to be a therapist this season but I guess we’ll have to wait to find out more about this Dr. Callahan as the season unfolds. I wonder if she’s troubled. I can’t quite pinpoint why, but something about her doesn’t sit well with me. I’ll reserve my full opinion for later.
***
The actors who portray the humans that were formerly dogs are very convincing. They growl, sneer, and display animal behavior much like a pack of dogs when threatened. Without even one word of dialogue, they are very effective in acting out dog-like behavior.

Interesting and humorous conversations:
Duke and Nathan after the morning coffee scare:
Nathan: “What are you doing here?”
Duke: “In case you forgot, Audrey got abducted; I’m changing the locks.”
Nathan: “YOU’RE changing the locks?”
Duke: “Yeah, I’m changing the locks but you know, we (pointing to Audrey) got to chatting, flavored coffees, scented candles…girl talk.”
***
Nathan commenting on Audrey’s refusal to talk to Dr. Callahan: “It might not be such a bad idea. You did give my coat to a zombie and you almost let Duke stab me this morning.”
***
Audrey and Duke after they find a barn full of naked and dirty people:
Audrey: “I wish we could just call a bunch of back up.”
Nathan: “And say what, ‘We got eight to ten cavemen in a barn; we’ve discovered the missing link?’”
***
Duke uncovers clues after going through old Haven Herald copies and learns what The Hunter is—a meteor storm from the Orion constellation that happens every 27 years. Coincidence or fate? What does this mean for Audrey? With only 49 days until this meteor storm, will that be enough time for her to help the troubled in Haven and find out if the Colorado Kid is still alive? I can’t wait to find out.
