RATING:
“I’ve been dreaming about Stefan.” – Elena
The Vampire Diaries is moving into darker territory—not only with the return of Stefan (Paul Wesley) but Silas (Wesley) and his infamous witchy love Ketsia (Janina Gavankar) too. I didn’t expect the Ripper to return, as Stefan never turned his humanity off, but I was expecting a bit more menace from him. How disappointing to see him behaving like a newly turned vamp, unaware of his hunger or aversion to sun.
Observations and thoughts:
This week’s episode “Original Sin” focuses on Stefan’s return to the living (ha, ha), and an introduction of a new witch. And we’re back to the doppelganger hobbity-hoo. You know, I can’t handle the explanation for Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Stefan’s love being rooted in destiny that began millions of years ago. It’s stupid. Why not come up with a better explanation for the star-crossed lovers? Or, how about letting Elena and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) have their romance? Elena will always have someone to bounce back to but Damon only has Elena. He tells her “You are my life…” and she gets, well, sidetracked. If she loves Damon so much, nothing should be able to come between them. So my guess would be their love isn’t as heartfelt for the both of them. His heart is on his damn sleeve. “Any sign of trouble you let her go, do you understand me? I don’t care how much Silas wants Katherine; she’s not worth the hair on your head.” Come on! Where’s Elena’s declaration of love? She doesn’t deserve him but I hate to see him alone.
While excited to finally meet Ketsia (as she wants to be called, Tessa), I’m disappointed in how she’s being portrayed. She’s crazy, which is to be expected, but not convincingly so. I think Ketsia is so overwhelmed by her need for revenge, and having been dead on the other side for 2,000 years, she’s got a one-track mind. I don’t believe she’s all nuts. When she thinks about Silas, she snaps. That’s not enough to make me believe her lunacy. “I have trust issues. I’m controlling and paranoid, and a little crazy.” Eh, I’d say overacting but that’s just me. Gavankar does a better job portraying an upset Ketsia. The crazy just doesn’t flow off her like it should. I’m over Ketsia. Let’s bring in the new big bad.
That’s when Nadia (Olga Fonda) comes in. I’m really intrigued by the Travelers (gypsies we know next to nothing about). Considering Silas and Ketsia used to belong to the mysterious group, I’m sure that means more visitors will be coming to Mystic Falls. Knowing as little about Silas as it is, it’d be nice to learn a bit more about the immortal troublemaker. Nadia knows him but we don’t know how. And her being a vampire hasn’t been lost on me, either. I didn’t catch that before. Do you think she sacrificed her humanity for the allure of being immortal? Or was her motivation being able to handle Silas? I find it odd everyone he encounters consistently forgets he can read and control their thoughts. Unless they’re dead. Which should count for vampires too, right? But that’s no longer an issue so … what now?
Memorable and funny lines:
Katherine to Elena and Damon about their road trip: “Shotgun! What? I get car sick in the backseat. Another charming human side effect you stuck me with.”
**
Damon to Elena about Nadia: “Wonderful, now we’ve got a vampire bounty hunter to deal with. Let me guess, Euro-bitch was not part of the dream?”
**
Damon to Ketsia about Stefan’s bonds: “Question: why is my brother wearing your compost pile?”
**
Silas to Katherine: “Your blood is the cure, Katherine. Does that clear things up for you?”
**
I don’t think I can properly express how confused I am by the chain of events that occurs at the end of “Original Sin.” How unoriginal! What more will be done to Stefan in order to garner sympathy for him? OK, I’ll bite. An amnesia plot can be useful to a show if done well. Let’s hope the writers don’t go off on such a horrible tangent that it ruins a good thing.

Thank you – I love your reviews. Spot on. Seriously, is Elena just plain dumb or what? I mean what more does Damon have to do to prove his undying devotion to her? I want to just smack the crap out of her. And I totally agree that the ‘crazy’ act was really bad acting…but the hurt/upset act was believable. I just hope the amnesia thing with Stefan turns out to be good…but in the clips, I think the writers are trying to rekindle what Elena and Stefan have….boring! I’m tired of the brothers fighting over Elena – is she even worth it anymore? I wonder if the writers will somehow try to get Elena to accidentally take the cure – the cure that runs through Katherine’s veins? Plot twist there could be intriguing.

Thanks for the love. I still kind of wish Elena had gone off that bridge without vampire blood in her system. Do you know how much drama would be avoided? LOL! I think the season is getting better though. I’m looking forward to what’s to come.
