One of last summer’s newest shows, The Last Ship, quickly became one of my favorites. I tuned in each Sunday night eagerly anticipating what the crew of the USS Nathan James would find in the next leg of their perilous journey. If you are unfamiliar with the series, here’s a quick recap: the world has been, and continues to be, ravaged by a deadly plague, wiping out billions of people. The USS Nathan James is a naval battleship tasked with escorting two CDC doctors to the arctic for a secret mission. The crew of the Nathan James remains unaware of the real mission until it’s time to head home, but will there be anything left to return home to? The proverbial cat jumps out of the bag when Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) informs Captain Tom Chandler (Eric Danes) about the dire situation. As season one progressed, Dr. Scott continued to search for a cure with the primordial strain she found in the Arctic, but the Nathan James isn’t the only ship sailing the ocean blue. Other countries have set out to find Dr. Scott and what may possibly be the cure to this deadly plague. In the season one finale, the Nathan James finally makes it to Baltimore but what awaits them isn’t the home coming they’d hoped for. With a new regime in command and the ship under attack, season two can’t come soon enough.
In talking with the cast and creators/producers, the conversations were interesting, especially the interview with Rhona Mitra and John Pyper-Ferguson. Their characters are in a bit of a love conundrum and when the subject of their relationship popped up, I laughed out loud at what Mitra does. She says, “triplets!” You’ll have to watch the video for the full effect.
And a little more love was spread around as Jocko Sims, who plays Lt. Carlton Burke, and Travis Van Winkle, who plays Lt. Danny Green, flanked the unsuspecting Christina Elmore, who plays Lt. Alisha Granderson, at our table. The two hunky men each gave her a kiss on the cheek, which segued into a conversation about the show and repopulating Earth’s decimated population. Let’s just say procreation was the order of the day in this press room.
The co-creators and executive producers Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane, along with executive producer Jack Bender, provided intriguing insight into what will transpire in season two. And, as noted in the video interview, there is no time jump – season two picks up where season one left off.
Only one month until the season two premiere – don’t miss it!
