I Knew There Was A Catch To Those Rings... Review: The Vampire Diaries "1912" 1

Don't you just love flashbacks were we learn close to nothing?

As “1912” opens, I already sense the mystery deepening regarding the murdering psychopath who’s killing off council members. I’m not sure where the show can go at this rate since mysteries so far, seem to be their only gimmick. There has to be something more going on in Mystic Falls for the writers to focus on. Hello! The Original family, recently turned vampires, the various love triangles going on? One very cool aspect of “1912” is the intermingling flashbacks between the present and past. They bring a certain element of surprise to the episode. You never know what you’re going to see from one scene to the next or what you might learn during a blast from the past. And, while this episode isn’t the best showing of The Vampire Diaries it does makes me question where the story will go next.

Observations and thoughts:

Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) up to her old tricks, nosing around where she doesn’t belong. But I have to wonder, if she didn’t press as much as she does, if she didn’t have to always find out what was going on, would things progress as much as they do? She tends to get things going when no one else does.

These three are definitely not The Stooges.

Elijah’s (Daniel Gillies) gone and I’m saddened. He’s the only bright light about the evil vampires who roam the streets. I like to watch his internal battle—having a conscience yet being a vampire. He does everything with so much panache and charm that you know you shouldn’t like him, but can’t help yourself. Rebekah (Clair Holt), on the other hand, can’t be the good girl. I wouldn’t want her to; the temperament doesn’t suit her. Since there’s no Katherine, the show’s been missing a resident bad girl. I like Rebekah when she’s on a vengeful mission. She has purpose, she’s inventive. You never know what she’s going to do next.

What’s interesting is that the cold, distant Stefan (Paul Wesley) from 1912 is the same one we see today. He’s detached from his emotions but in a different way. His impassiveness back then seems to stem from his hating what he’s become. His detachment now of course, is Klaus’ (Joseph Morgan) fault since he’s the one who ‘helped’ Stefan to free his mind. I think that means Stefan will eventually find his way back to his old, new self.

Sage is definitely going to be a problem. You know she'll be showing up soon.

I love the mocking tone Damon (Ian Somerhalder) uses while reading Stefan’s diary. It’s hilarious that he has no remorse about making fun of his brother and the subtle hint of joy he gets from it cracks me up. At this point, Damon is the comic relief. He always brings a smile to my face by doing something silly for just laughs. I don’t think he does it purposely though; he just goes about his everyday routine and boom drops a joke out of nowhere. I’d miss him if he were gone. I’d miss him if he were a dud like Stefan. Good thing he isn’t, right?

Funny lines:

Damon as he watches Stefan fidgeting in front of his diary: “Dear diary, a chipmunk asked me my name today. I told him it was Joe. That lie will haunt me forever.”

Damon to Stefan: “I was hoping we can hang. You know, a little brother bonding. I mean I know we don’t hang actually… hang out. We team up. We join forces. We activate our Wonder Twin powers.”

Rebekah to Stefan: “Why are you so grumpy?”

Damon: “He’s on a master cleanse…”

The focus of “1912” isn’t really on the founding council killer; it’s on the Salvatore brothers. They do have a bond. It’s been broken, tried and tested, and now they’re working to repair it. I don’t think I realized at first how much Damon and Stefan need one another. Damon may joke about their Wonder Twin powers, but they are much more effective together than apart. Damon is the glue that holds Stefan together. Now if only they could figure out their ‘thing’ with Elena, the world would be set to rights.
