Although Hale (K.C. Collins) is functioning as The Ash, it wasn’t made official until now. The day of his inauguration is coming, and The Morrigan (Emmanuelle Vaugier) plans to shift an unfavorable light on him by blaming him for humans entering the Dal Riata. Hale wants to keep the peace with all Fae but The Morrigan has other ideas.
“Hail, Hale” is a fast and furious episode, uncovering Tamsin’s (Rachel Skarsten) betrayal of Bo (Anna Silk), Kenzi’s (Ksenia Solo) human nature putting her in danger with the Fae, Lauren (Zoie Palmer) making a heady discovery, and Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) having to fight a mortal enemy Fae to save his life. I had a hard time keeping up with everything but we get a shocking revelation by the end, having to do with Lauren unknowingly working in cahoots with her new boss Isaac (Shawn Doyle), a power-hungry man with a narrow vision of imbuing humans with Fae-like mightiness.
If you haven’t seen “Hail, Hale” yet, you’ll be happy to learn where Bo’s mother, Aoife (Inga Cadranel), has been all this time. You also see how strangely Tamsin acts. She’s in a drunken stupor the entire time, obviously conflicted about betraying Bo and having no one to turn to but the bottle:
Tamsin: “Your heart is both strong and gentle. You’re virtuous. You’re a Succubus. You shouldn’t be.”
Bo: “What?”
Tamsin: “Be real. Be here.”
Seeing Tamsin in this state reveals her inner struggle to do what is inherently right while also fulfilling her responsibility to bring Bo to The Morrigan. How can she hope to do both without upsetting either party? With the recent revelation that Bo is the Wanderer, Tamsin will have to step up and deliver Bo somehow, putting both of them in danger. Tamsin’s loyalty is being sorely tested, but I have a feeling her allegiance to Bo will win out. Skarsten plays drunk pretty convincingly, slurring her words and stumbling about in a way that feels believable.
I’ve always liked Hale, but I feel he’s lacking the major cojones to handle The Morrigan. I don’t understand how he allowed her to badmouth him at the Dal in front of the Fae community, and I was upset with him for scapegoating Kenzi about the human paramedics, but he proves himself trustworthy by secretly passing Kenzi a protection vial before sending her off in handcuffs (“Kenzi, you are not my friend. You’ve never been just a friend.”). As pissed off as Kenzi is with him, she loves him and he loves her. I believe he’ll always protect her, a lowly human, because they’ve got a history now. But why does it take so long for him to profess his love for her? Ah, because she’s human. Got it.
I love the scene where Hale and Dyson share a drink like old friends. Collins and Holden-Ried seem like dear friends who’ve spent years together, and they have a well-worn rapport with each other’s characters. Hale and Dyson will always have each other’s backs even with Hale’s change in status:
Dyson: “I’m proud of my old partner.”
Hale: “I miss my old partner.”
Lauren is so blinded by her own ambitions that she doesn’t realize Isaac is pulling the wool over her eyes until it’s too late. Coming face to face with Dyson underground, she realizes her grave error. I guess Isaac’s flattering comments went to her head. What will happen now? It’s up to Tamsin and Bo to save the Fae, including Aoife, who’s practically insane by this point.
With the finale in two weeks, who will win out?
