THE NIGHT OF, an eight-part limited series created by Steven Zaillian and Richard Price, debuts SUNDAY, JULY 10 (9:00-10:30 p.m. ET/PT),
The eight-part HBO limited series production THE NIGHT OF, created by Steven Zaillian (“Schindler’s List,” “American Gangster”) and Richard Price (“The Color of Money,” HBO’s “The Wire”), will debut this summer, exclusively on HBO. Starring John Turturro (“Fading Gigolo,” “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”) and Riz Ahmed (“Nightcrawler”), and directed by Steven Zaillian from teleplays by Price and Zaillian, the limited series delves into the intricacies of a complex New York City murder case with cultural and political overtones. The story examines the police investigation, the legal proceedings, the criminal justice system and the feral purgatory of Rikers Island, where the accused await trial for felony crimes.
THE NIGHT OF is executive produced by Steven Zaillian, Richard Price, Jane Tranter (HBO’s “Getting On” and “Rome”), James Gandolfini (HBO’s “Wartorn: 1861-2010” and “Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq”) and Peter Moffat (“Criminal Justice,” HBO’s “Einstein and Eddington”); co-executive produced by Garrett Basch (“Life Itself”), Nancy Sanders (HBO’s “Hemingway & Gellhorn”) and Mark Armstrong (“Hemingway & Gellhorn”). Mark A. Baker (“Damages”) produced part 1; Scott Ferguson (HBO’s “The Normal Heart”) produced parts 2-8. Steven Zaillian directed parts 1-3 and 5-8; James Marsh (“The Theory of Everything”) directed part 4.
The limited series’ ensemble cast includes Michael Kenneth Williams (HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and “Bessie”), Bill Camp (“12 Years a Slave,” “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”), Jeannie Berlin (“Inherent Vice”), Poorna Jagannathan (“Thanks for Sharing”), Payman Maadi (“A Separation”), Glenne Headly (“Don Jon,” “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”), Amara Karan (“The Darjeeling Limited”), Sofia Black-D’Elia (“The Immigrant”), Paul Sparks (“Mud,” HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire”), Ben Shenkman (“Royal Pains,” HBO’s “Angels in America”), Afton Williamson (CINEMAX’s “Banshee”), Paulo Costanzo (“Road Trip”), Ned Eisenberg (“Last Man Standing”), Mohammad Bakri (“Laila’s Birthday”), Nabil Elouahabi (“Zero Dark Thirty”), Ashley Thomas (“The Man Inside”), Glenn Fleshler (“A Most Violent Year”), Chip Zien (“United 93”) and Max Casella (HBO’s “Vinyl,” “Inside Llewyn Davis”).
THE NIGHT OF was filmed in and around Manhattan; based on the BBC series “Criminal Justice,” created by Peter Moffat.
The film is produced by Filmrights and BBC Worldwide Productions for HBO.
**ADDED JULY EPISODES**
Pakistani-American college student Nasir “Naz” Khan, who lives with his parents in Queens, NY, takes his father’s taxi to go a party in Manhattan. But what starts as a perfect night for Naz becomes a nightmare when he’s arrested for murder.
Created by Steven Zaillian (“Schindler’s List,” “American Gangster”) and Richard Price (“The Color of Money,” HBO’s “The Wire”), the eight-part HBO limited series production THE NIGHT OF debuts SUNDAY, JULY 10 (9:00-10:30 p.m. ET/PT), followed by hour-long episodes debuting subsequent Sundays at the same time, exclusively on HBO. The show is also available on HBO NOW, HBO GO and HBO On Demand.
Starring John Turturro (“Fading Gigolo,” “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”) and Riz Ahmed (“Nightcrawler”), and directed by Zaillian (7 episodes) and James Marsh (1 episode), from teleplays by Price and Zaillian, the show delves into the intricacies of a complex New York City murder case with cultural and political overtones. The story examines the police investigation, the legal proceedings, the criminal justice system and Rikers Island, where the accused await trial.
“It’s a crime story, a police story, a legal story, a corrections story,” observes Zaillian. “You make a story about all that, tell it honestly, and it will naturally be a social story.”
