“You can’t extort me with soda and pornography, Vincent.” – Dave
“Speak No Evil” doesn’t lose traction after the shocking end to last week’s season premiere, “See No Evil,” during which Mara (Emily Rose) shoots Nathan (Lucas Bryant). I knew he wasn’t dead…ok, so I was worried a little, but the writers can’t kill Nathan. They just can’t. As “Speak No Evil” begins, Duke (Eric Balfour) finds Nathan but is oblivious to Nathan’s injury because he’s so consumed with finding Jennifer (Emma Lahana). But, if you recall in the season four finale, “The Lighthouse,” Jennifer stopped breathing inside the cave.
The sewing trouble is still causing mayhem but we now know Duke is the one causing everyone around him to have their eyes, ears, and mouths sewn shut. Coincidentally, this usually happens whenever he mentions Jennifer. Duke doesn’t want to see, hear, or speak the truth he knows deep inside.
Meanwhile, the Guard is up in arms over Vince’s (Richard Donat) lack of leadership and begins looking to Dwight (Adam Copeland) for guidance in ending the troubles. Will Vince allow Dwight to take over as leader of the guard?
And Mara is becoming more and more ruthless in her quest to get through a thin spot or “thinnie” as she calls it. She is tasering and much worse to people to get what she wants. But she gets a wakeup call, or rather a knock-you-out call, when Nathan turns the tables on her.
Moment #5 – New Leader of the Guard. As the seasons have progressed, the introduction of Dwight has been one of the highlights. Copeland is honing his acting chops and becoming one of my favorites on Haven. I love Copeland’s portrayal of Dwight. With Dwight’s unique trouble of being a bullet magnet, he must improvise and use alternative methods to get the job done. Dwight is also very level headed and is more helpful to the members of the Guard, a society of people whose members are united in helping those who are troubled in their own way. In “Speak No Evil,” Dwight takes it a step further and takes over, replacing Vince as the new leader of the Guard. While Vince may have been “born” with the symbol on his arm, Dwight embraces it, has it tattooed on his entire back, and owns it like no other. I’m very curious about the Guard and why Vince thinks the symbol is meant to protect the troubled in the way only the Guard can.
Moment #4 – The Pencil is Mightier than the Sword. Mara really outdoes herself in “Speak No Evil” by killing a vitamin saleswoman (Kelin Boyd) with a pencil to the eye. But she doesn’t stop there, oh no. She takes the dead woman’s outfit! Yeah, how tacky is that even though it’s a great outfit? Not condoning Mara’s actions…just pointing out it is a smart outfit.
Moment #3 – R.I.P. Jennifer? To say I am saddened by the discovery of Jennifer’s lifeless body is an understatement. I really liked her. Lahana was a breath of fresh air to the series and I know there was more to her story. So, I do not accept that she is truly gone. I mean, we’ve seen people come back from the dead, right? Am I in denial like Duke is? Perhaps, but one thing I know about the town of Haven, not everything is as it seems. At least I’m not sewing people’s eyes, ears and mouths shut. Duke even sewed up Nathan!
Moment #2 – Drawing Your Own Reality. Mara, posing as Audrey Parker (Rose), enlists the help of Vickie Dutton (Molly Dunsworth), an intern in the coroner’s office who has a unique trouble. Whatever Vickie draws becomes a reality, of sorts. Mara thinks if Vickie draws the woods around one of the thin spots, she can rip the drawing, thus creating a way inside. Yeah, doesn’t really work like that, Mara. You can’t “sculpt your world” like that. When she realizes Vickie is an “early model,” and Mara needs “something with real oomph,” she tasers Vickie. Taking Vikie’s badge in order to get inside the morgue, Mara plans to ‘Frankenstein’ a newer version of Vickie’s trouble. I would love to see that happen. But there is a problem – Mara doesn’t have her black goo or “aether,” as she calls it, to trouble someone. Side note: If the name Dunsworth sounds familiar, it’s because Molly is the youngest daughter of fellow Haven actor John Dunsworth, who plays Dave Teague.
Moment #1 – Nathan is Alive! Come on, you know this is the moment you’ve been looking forward to ever since Mara shot Nathan in “See No Evil”. But more importantly is where Mara shot him. With a clear shot to the head or chest, she could have killed Nathan easily but she didn’t. Could Audrey still be in there? Nathan seems to think so when he captures Mara and while she’s unconscious, he says “Goodbye, Parker,” giving her a kiss on the lips. Suddenly Mara wakes up, only it’s not Mara; it’s Audrey? Wait…is this another trick or is Audrey’s personality still trapped within Mara? The saga continues!
“Speak No Evil” also shows Dave (John Dunsworth) waking up from his self-induced morphine slumber. Is he simply hiding out in his own mind or is he trying to numb the pain from the horrible contusions he has all over his body? Who is attacking Dave in his sleep? What is in the “green mist” he mentions? I’m anxious for the mystery to unfold. And Vince is kind of cruel…teasing his brother with “Tab®” soda and “Jugs Ahoy” magazine. By the way, I love Tab®.
