Haven — “Reflections” Recap. Steam. Lots and Lots of Steam!

“I’m curious, Dr. Cross. Why haven’t you told your people about Haven?” – Audrey

[warning] SPOILERS AHEAD [/warning]

Things are getting very complex on Haven and when people literally start falling apart, it takes the “troubles” to a whole new level of weird.

A strange trouble is causing physical manifestations affecting a person’s self-esteem – a woman in debt who feels like she can’t keep it together begins to literally fall to pieces; a young boy being bullied for being tall, weak, and lanky then becomes a strapping muscle bound jock. But his strength is short lived and he is nearly crushed to death by his dumbbell. If Audrey (Emily Rose) can’t figure out who is causing this trouble, someone else might die.

Kinda gives new meaning to the phrase ‘falling to pieces’

When the body of the first victim, Marcy (Tara Doyle), is found by a local bakery clerk Grace (Aislinn Paul), the store owner Janet (Alisen Down) reveals some terribly unkind truths about how she feels about “troubled” people. Janet is colder than ice. Her demeanor could trigger a lot more than a trouble in anyone. But when Janet learns her daughter Samantha’s (Celeste Desjardins) girlfriend Grace is troubled, she fires Grace. This triggers Samantha’s trouble to kick into high gear. When Samantha looks directly at a person, they transform physically into what they think they are. Marcy’s life was in shambles so she couldn’t hold it together; Terrence (Adam Wade Smith) wanted to be strong and muscular; and when Samantha looks at her mother, Janet becomes a frightened little girl (Isabella Baxter), afraid of the troubles.

Charlotte seems taken aback when she first meets Audrey, as if she’s seen a ghost.

Audrey is able to talk Samantha down, so to speak, but Audrey is still sick. The news Dr. Charlotte Cross (guest star Laura Mennell) gives Audrey about her blood work is disturbing. When Nathan (Lucas Bryant) urges Audrey to visit Charlotte about her cough, the blood work results show “rapid waves of deterioration.” Charlotte explains, “every cell in your body is degenerating.” What the heck does this mean? Is Audrey going to disintegrate like a piece of dry bone? But then, Audrey is completely healed again. It’s very perplexing. As an aside, is it just me or is Charlotte’s reaction to meeting Audrey for the first time odd? It’s almost like she’s seeing a friend she hasn’t seen in a very long time.

Meanwhile, Duke and Mara (Emily Rose) are hiding out in a cabin near water. Duke is trying to contain his troubles but it’s becoming increasingly more difficult because he doesn’t have any more benign troubles in him. All the troubles he has left to release are very dangerous and could cause “mass causalities.” The fact that Mara escapes only to come back with groceries is leading Duke further down a path of misguided trust. Mara has an endgame and it’s apparent she wants Duke to be part of it.

Steam. Lots and lots of steam!

As Mara helps Duke release a trouble, the place literally steams up but the real heat comes after Mara aids Duke in conquering the trouble. Just as Audrey talked Samantha down, Mara does the same for Duke, except Mara uses more than words to help him. Gives new meaning to her previous sentiment, “…helping you helps me.” Indeed.

A surprising revelation occurs during Charlotte’s examination of Marcy’s foot—Marcy doesn’t have the identifying DNA marker Charlotte’s been finding in all the contagion patients. So only when a person’s trouble is activated does the gene make itself visible? It’s very interesting yet also unnerving. Charlotte needs more aether (black goo) but someone has stolen it and it wasn’t Duke.

Funny Moment

Love her!

I love Gloria (Jayne Eastwood). I absolutely adore the sarcastic humor she brings to Haven. Gloria isn’t too fond of “Dr. Fancy Pants,” aka Charlotte. While at the bakery’s crime scene, Gloria is ordered to give over some physical evidence to Charlotte to test for DNA markers of the trouble gene. “She can have the left foot, there’s plenty; but if I was 30 years younger, she’d have to come down here and take it from me. Just a skinny thing too, isn’t she? Too skinny – it looks weird.”

My jaw is still on the floor. No words. Thank you, Eric Balfour. Thank you.

Eye Popping, Extra Steamy Moment

Let’s address the ginormous and very naked pink elephant in the room. Duke and Mara hooking up – I knew it would happen; you could feel the sexual tension oozing out of her, especially after the shower scene in “Morbidity.” I wondered if Duke would become Mara’s version of William (Colin Ferguson) but I’m not sure how I feel about this new development. I can’t deny it though, I was gawking at my television screen with my jaw on the floor as if I was a voyeur on their intimate moment; and yes, I did rewind my DVR more than once to see Balfour’s beautiful naked back. When Duke has to release a trouble, it seems fitting it would be something extremely steamy—literally and figuratively. Did you notice the look Mara has in her eyes realizing she is actually with Duke in this way? Duke also has a moment of ‘what the hell am I doing’ but it vanishes quickly. Do you think, just for a moment, Duke thinks about Mara being Audrey? He told Mara he wished she was someone else when he was suppressing another trouble, so I wonder if Duke feels he can finally have Audrey in some way.

Wild Hair theory

Last week, I noted in my recap of “Mortality” that I thought Charlotte could be the new Audrey Parker. After watching “Reflections,” I think my original theory may be slight off kilter. What if Charlotte isn’t the new Audrey but instead she is the new Agent Howard (Maurice Dean Wint)?

Overall

The end of “Reflections” sends everything I thought into the wind. Why does Charlotte have a file containing photos of all the previous incarnations of Audrey – Sarah, Lucy, and possibly the one Mara mentioned in “Spotlight,” Veronica? There is also a newspaper clipping that has “Spanish Influenza” on it. Is Charlotte lying about what’s really making Audrey sick? I’m hoping we get answers about who Charlotte really is.
