Haven — “Enter Sandman” Recap. Dream a Little Nightmare.

Let’s hope Audrey doesn’t say “I do” with that do…

Haven holds nothing back as these final episodes unleash some strange and intriguing “troubles.” “Enter Sandman” finds our heroine Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) in a bit of a pickle when Henry (Rossif Sutherland), aka the “Sandman,” becomes infatuated with her, trapping her in his dream world. Can Audrey escape before she says, “I do?”

If you remember, Henry became smitten with Audrey when she offered to help him in the mid-season premiere, part two “Power.” Audrey learned The Guard was using Henry’s unique abilities to put so-called criminals and outcasts of Haven into a sleep stasis. Of course, the ever helpful Audrey thought Henry was being forced to do this and wanted to assist him. This act of kindness gave Henry a false sense of acceptance and he ran with it…all the way to a dream alter state to marry Audrey in “Enter Sandman.”

Throughout “Enter Sandman,” two main storylines circle each other. One – getting Audrey out of Henry’s dream world before she’s lost forever; and two – Duke (Eric Balfour) trying to convince Seth (guest star Kris Lemche) Haven truly does exist. Since I’ve touched on the first, I’ll go into the second.

If you recall, we met Seth, a roving paranormal investigator, when he came to Haven, Maine seeking the truth behind the unexplained phenomenon in episode 411, “Shot in the Dark.” Turns out, all things weird are not always the result of a gas explosion; who knew? I digress. After being locked inside a cargo container, Duke is released by none other than Seth. The glitch – Seth doesn’t remember Duke or the town of Haven, or ever having been there, for that matter. Odd, right? At the end of the mid-season premiere, part one, “New World Order,” Duke left Haven, hitching a ride out of town with a trucker who said he never heard of Haven either. Haven does exist but for some reason, people are having difficulty remembering it. I’m sure we’ll find out why before the end of the series.

Duke talks Seth into a road trip to find a mysterious man who can “remove the tar” from your soul.

As Duke helps Seth remember “mer-men” and “the troubles,” they devise a plan to go to North Carolina to seek out a man who can “remove the black tar of evil from your soul.” Black tar, huh? Hmm…sounds like “aether” to me. Then, a peculiar thing happens. As soon as Seth walks away from Duke to grab more snacks for the road trip, he forgets everything about Haven all over again. I’m intrigued as to how and why people are losing their memories of Haven. But Duke, determined to figure it out, chases Seth down and rehashes their conversation as they begin their journey toward North Carolina.

If you didn’t hear, William Shatner will be guest starring this season and I’m guessing he’s the man in NC who supposedly can remove tar from people. I’m also wondering whether he’s Charlotte’s (Laura Mennell) long lost husband. Does that also mean he’s Audrey’s father? (Queue dramatic music: Dun-dun-dun!)

Meanwhile, back in Haven, Audrey’s true love Nathan (Lucas Bryant) desperately continues his vigil, sitting by her side whispering in her ear that she’s in danger. Don’t you just love seeing these two together? But Henry’s unrelenting persistence in keeping Audrey with him starts to crack when he begins losing control over the many people he’s placed in stasis. Charlotte finds herself in the dream world – ok, she deliberately inserts herself but that’s semantics – to help her daughter escape. The harder Henry tries to keep Audrey from remembering, the weaker his hold becomes on the others. Grayson (Tim Beresford), one of Audrey’s friends, figures things out in the fantasy world Henry has weaved but to his detriment.

Henry begins losing control and his make-believe world begins to crumble.

Finally, Henry begins losing control, allowing Audrey’s memories to come flooding back. As Nathan continues talking to her in her pseudo-coma, he explains that because Henry can’t control himself, she won’t be able to talk him down from his trouble like she does with the other troubled people. She needs to get him to release everyone before the dream world collapses.

PHEW! Talk about a psychedelic trip! The final scenes of “Enter Sandman” become trippy when Audrey and the dream world go in and out of focus as if a gong were vibrating after being hit. Sutherland delivers an amazing performance as the guarded and misunderstood Henry. Henry lost his parents at a young age in a horrendous car crash that left him with terrible facial scarring. His insecurities about his appearance and being orphaned set off his trouble. He escapes into a made up world in his mind where he’s not disfigured but instead, admired and loved. As an aside, I recognized Sutherland from the 2003 film Timeline. And yes, he is the son of renowned actor Donald Sutherland and Kiefer Sutherland’s half-brother.
