“Hell is empty and all the devils are here.” – Grimm

Drama, action, adventure, and danger lurk in every nook and cranny of this “Grimm” episode, “Where the Wild Things Were.” I thought I was doing a good job of preparing myself to say goodbye, building my strength for the upcoming series finale, but after watching this episode, I’m not sure if I’ll ever be ready to say farewell to the Scooby Gang of Portland. “Where the Wild Things Were” picks up where “Blood Magic” left off as Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner) find their mirror uncovered, with blood on the edge, and Eve (Elizabeth Tulloch) nowhere to be found.
I’m still angry with Eve for venturing into the mirror to a place unknown without letting anyone know. I understand her motivation but it doesn’t excuse her irrational and erratic behavior. She may be a powerful Hexenbiest, but her abilities may not be enough to stop whatever evil is hiding in the shadows of “the other place.”

As the storyline progresses, I found myself reminded of another piece of literature, C.S. Lewis’ novel, “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” The place where Eve ends up after going through the mirror resembles the snowy forest where Lucy encountered Mr. Tumnus after walking through the wardrobe in the book. Snow blankets the ground and there are towering stones set in a circle similar to the ruins of the Drombeg Stone Circle in Ireland. Eve notices the symbols she and Diana (Hannah R. Lloyd) are able to see carved into one of the stones. She’s definitely in the right place but the timing isn’t quite clear. It appears she’s gone back in time where the creatures are wild and humans seem primitive.

Throughout “Where the Wild Things Were,” Monroe, Rosalee, Nick (David Giuntoli), and Adalind (Claire Coffee), as well as Hank (Russell Hornsby) and Wu (Reggie Lee), try to figure out how to get Eve back from the mirror, a task easier said than done. Apparently, all roads lead back to the magic stick Nick and Monroe found in the Black Forest in episode 512, “Into the Schwarzwald.” Coincidentally, or not, the place where Eve is looks like the Black Forest. It’s very interesting how the stick isn’t able to go through the mirror with Nick. Of course, Diana knows the “stick doesn’t belong” in the other place. That would have been useful information before Nick stepped through. Just saying.

The frightening part of “Where the Wild Things Were” comes when the gang enlists Renard’s (Sasha Roiz) help to call his friend Dasha (guest star Alla Korot). They’re hoping she will know if there is a way to retrieve Nick and Eve from the mirror. When Dasha speaks to Diana directly, I again get that uneasy feeling as if Diana knows more than she’s telling. Is it because she doesn’t know what to say until the right questions are asked or is she afraid that saying too much will cause something unknown to become reality? Either way, Dasha is frightened of what she believes Diana is – a “Shaphat” or “child bride” – and, according to some ancient prophecy, skull guy, aka “Zerstörer,” from the mirror wants Diana so he can have a “hundred children.” I’m speechless. The “Grimm” writers really know how to pile on some ominous, demented plot twists.
The other alarming plot twist revolves around the other place and how all the Wesen are permanently woged. They don’t just transform like they do in present day Portland; they are in their Wesen forms all the time. With Eve being a Hexenbiest, her assessment, “Wesen here don’t woge,” is true. But if she stays a Hexenbiest in this plane of existence, what will happen when she returns to the other side of the mirror?

There is so much that happens in “Where the Wild Things Were,” but I’m still not sure exactly what it all means yet. I know “Zerstörer” is the harbinger of evil and desperately wants something in Portland. Could it be as simple as wanting Diana because of her immense powers and abilities, or is there something else in Portland that he seeks? With only one episode before the series finale, I’m becoming a bit wary of what’s in store for we fans. I think I might need a box of tissues.
