Grimm – “The Inheritance” Recap. Witch’s Brew.

“The Inheritance” is the penultimate episode providing more insight into Trubel’s (Jacqueline Toboni) past, more talk of Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee’s (Bree Turner) upcoming nuptials, and what our favorite Hexenbiest witch Adalind (Claire Coffee) is up to. We also find out who the mysterious man in “My Fair Wesen” is…you know the sickly old guy with a key that looks like Nick’s (David Giuntoli) key. While I would have liked some more drama, I think “The Inheritance” gives us just the right amount of suspense to lead us into what I hope will be an epic season finale.

Who Doesn’t Love Spaghetti?

I’d like to thank the writers for showing us a girl who likes to eat. Trubel puts away a heaping plate of spaghetti at dinner. Monroe, Rosalee, and even Nick are surprised but thankfully don’t say anything. Being a Grimm must give her a fierce metabolism because as much as she eats, she is still in prime fighting form. But I appreciate the writers giving Trubel pause about the situation. “‘Cause I don’t want to get used to all this.”

I do love the dinner conversation. We learn how Trubel discovered she was a Grimm. It’s actually quite grim, no pun intended. Toboni continues to impress me with her acting range, going from ravenous to subdued within the same scene. I like the addition of Toboni to the cast, as well – she brings a varied dynamic that injects a bit of new life into the series. Not that the show needs it, but I think the introduction of yet another Grimm is foretelling. How many more Grimm are out there? Do all of them have keys?

The Best Girlfriend Award

Juliette, best girlfriend ever and she makes spaghetti!

Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch) wins the Best Girlfriend Award, hands down. Not only does she accept Nick’s peculiar lineage as a Grimm without much hesitation, but she welcomes Trubel into their home with little to no objections. The trust she must have in Nick is off the charts. As much as I adore Tulloch, I want the writers to give her a more substantial role. I haven’t seen her go to work and be a veterinarian. I haven’t seen her out with any of her friends. And I’d love to see her kick some ass…which I think may be coming up, especially now that we know what Adalind is up to.

Stake Out

Sean knows better than to trust Adalind.

Captain Sean Renard (Sasha Roiz) tasks Sgt. Wu (Reggie Lee) with trailing Adalind. Sean knows he can’t trust her completely. “If I didn’t know you better, I’d be in love with you.” Ouch. That’s not something a girl likes to hear. I’ve enjoyed seeing the transformation of Adalind from vengeful woman to desperate mother. She is relentless in her quest to get her daughter back. But the old Adalind still manages to find her way through. I’m just glad Sean isn’t playing right into her hands. Did she really think she was going to fool him completely? As an aside, thank you to whoever wrote Roiz’s nude scene. Seeing him shirtless and the illusion of full nudity…just…thank you.

Old Man Grimm

Trubel isn’t the Grimm Rolek and Josh were looking for but she’ll do in a pinch.

Rolek Porter (guest star Sam Anderson) comes to Portland with his son Josh (Lucas Near-Verbrugghe). Rolek is desperate to see Nick because he needs to give him something. With Josh unable to grasp what his father is talking about or even believe him, Rolek has no choice but to pass on his Grimm legacy to another Grimm. Is it me or just a coincidence that Rolek is riddled with cancer just as Nick’s Aunt Marie (Kate Burton) was in season one? Will every Grimm suffer the same fate before they die?

Random Thoughts

The Verrat are on the move and tracking Rolek. How do they know he has one of the keys?

Hank (Russell Hornsby) seems to be very comfortable with all the strange and supernatural things going on in Portland. He also seems cozy with the idea of covering up certain aspects of cases to help keep Trubel’s identity secret.

Minor inconsistencies of the pronunciation of “Hundjäger.” Should be HOONT-yay-ger, but Trubel says it right only once. Every other time she says HOONT-jay-ger.

Does the Grimm gene skip a generation or is Josh having a delayed reaction?

When Nick gets the key from Rolek’s cane, he uses ink to stamp the next part of the map. When you look at the map so far, it seems there are four imprints – each key makes a two part piece of the map. There are supposedly seven keys. How did they get four keys? I know Nick had one and now there is Rolek’s key, but where did the other two keys come from? Did I miss something? Please let me know.

Interesting lines:

After Rosalee has a mini melt down in the spice shop over wedding details, Monroe tries to soothe her and tells her weddings are supposed to be “overwhelming.”

Rosalee: “I just, um, I have this feeling something awful is going to happen.”

Monroe: “That’s the spirit.”

Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble…there is nothing good about this witch’s brew.

Adalind gets caught with her hand in the cookie jar. When Sean asks her what she’s doing, she snaps, “I’m doing what I have to.”

At the hospital, Josh asks Nick, “What kind of cop are you?” To which Nick replies, “I get asked that a lot.” It’s not really an answer but I think Nick is struggling with what kind of cop he is, too.

Overall

“The Inheritance” is a thought provoking episode, giving us a few more things to question without providing answers to much else. The Verrat know there is another key so it’s only a matter of time before the royals find out. Adalind’s twisted witch’s brew is complete and her transformation is…let’s just say I’m reminded of the polyjuice potion from Harry Potter, and she even has a witch’s hat she uses as a bong of sorts to inhale the fumes of the concoction. Will she really be able to fool Nick with this elaborate disguise?
