“I have but to swallow this, and be for the rest of my days persecuted by a legion of goblins, all of my own creation. Humbug, I tell you; humbug!” – Grimm

************** SPOILERS AHEAD **************

Christmastime is here; time for fun and time for stinky, hairy goblins to cheer. While Nick (David Giuntoli) and Hank (Russell Hornsby) investigate strange home invasions by odd looking creatures, Trubel (Jacqueline Toboni) and Josh (Lucas Near-Verbrugghe) look into finding out more about the attacks on Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner).

A young couple hosting a Christmas party gets an unexpected delivery – a very big, festively wrapped box. But when their party ends, the nightmare begins. That’s not a cool toy or coffee maker in there. A pint sized menace punches his way out of the box and lets two more of his buddies in the front door. This is just one of many home invasions and disturbances being reported. As Nick and Hank get the call to go to an active crime scene, what they both see is shocking. Yes, Hank can see them too, so it’s not clear whether this is Wesen related.

Meanwhile, Shaw (Donald MacEllis), the guy Bud (Danny Bruno) told Trubel about – the one who wanted to hurt Nick because he wasn’t a Grimm anymore–and his friends are part of the Wesen order that are opposed to inter-Wesen marriages like Monroe and Rosalee’s. Trubel, Nick, and Bud do some reconnaissance to find out more and what they discover is disturbing. A note to the writers: “Big Johnson” is the name you chose for that scary looking dude with the mask? Really? I mean, I got a good chuckle but it’s kind of lame.

Captain Renard (Sasha Roiz) tells Nick his mother Elizabeth (Louise Lombard) has left Portland and she’s probably going after Nick’s mother Kelly (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). As we know from season three, Kelly took Adalind (Claire Coffee) and Renard’s baby to save her from the royals. Now, Grandma Elizabeth wants to see her granddaughter. The conversation between Renard and Nick is serious but humorous.

Renard: “I don’t want my mother to kill your mother.”

Nick: “And I don’t want my mother to kill your mother.”

Who do you think would win the mom vs. mom showdown?

The hairy little beasts wreaking havoc on Portland aren’t what they appear to be. These feisty and rude monsters are actually children. After Nick, Hank, and Monroe go to the trailer and do some research, Nick sums it up best, “So Kallikantzroi are children of the Indole Gentile who somehow go through a puberty transformation during Christmas, but only at night.” And the only thing that will stop them is “fruitcake.”

Last week in “Highway of Tears,” Juliette inhaled a potion and became Adalind to help Nick regain his Grimm powers. Afterwards, she began experiencing some cramps and nausea. I said Juliette might have a bun in the oven and it looks like I might be right. But with Juliette being human and having been under the influence of powerful Hexenbiest magic, could this affect the baby somehow?

Overall

“The Grimm Who Stole Christmas” isn’t the best episode but it’s kind of fun. The toy train set and awesome Christmas décor at Monroe and Rosalee’s is always a treat to see. The one plot point that seems to have thrown me for a twist is Trubel deciding to help Josh get back to his life in Philadelphia. With all that is going on with the Wesen order trying to harm Monroe and Rosalee, is this the right time for Trubel to leave? Josh is the son of a Grimm but didn’t become a Grimm after his father’s death. Are the writers going to make Josh a Grimm after he faces off with the two Wesen waiting for him in Philadelphia? And what about Sgt. Wu (Reggie Lee)? Keeping him in the dark is only going to get increasingly difficult. Perhaps Trubel’s leaving is the answer.
