Grimm – “Headache” Recap. And So It Begins...

Season 4, Episode 21

The title of this week’s Grimm, “Headache,” takes on a more literal meaning than I anticipated. While a glimmer of Juliette’s (Bitsie Tulloch) humanity peeks through briefly, the Hexenbiest in her reigns supreme. Juliette’s alliance with Kenneth (Nico Evers-Swindell) and the royal family leads to deadly consequences. Meanwhile, Sean (Sasha Roiz) must battle his own demon – Jack is back and ready to paint the town red…blood red.

Has Juliette truly given in to her Hexenbiest side? Is there no coming back?

As “Headache” opens, the scene picks up where we left off with Juliette controlling Nick (David Giuntoli), making him aim his gun at Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell). Hank (Russell Hornsby) heroically jumps in front of Monroe to knock him out of the way and they both come out unscathed. Needless to say, Hank, Monroe, and Rosalee (Bree Turner) are done helping Juliette. Who can blame them?

The Ripper

My suspicions about Sean being Jack the Ripper are correct but so is my theory about him being possessed. It seems when Sean briefly died in the season opener, “Thanks for the Memories,” a portal to the other side was opened. According to Adalind (Claire Coffee), when his mother Elizabeth (Louise Lombard) brought him back to life, something “hitched” a ride back with Sean to the land of the living. Jack the Ripper’s spirt possesses Sean and the bullet wounds in his chest bleed whenever Jack takes over Sean’s body. Talk about battling your demons!

The Ripper takes over Sean’s body and is off to find another victim.

In true Grimm fashion, there might be some way to ‘fix’ Sean and rid him of his pernicious problem. Enter Monroe and Rosalee. To use a potion that feigns death, Nick and Hank must get Sean to The Spice Shop to dose him. Of course, that’s easier said than done. Poor Sgt. Wu (Reggie Lee) is charged with standing guard at Sean’s house while Nick and Hank work with Monroe and Rosalee on the potion. Sean experiences an episode in the bathroom during which his new friend Jack writes a message in blood on the bathroom mirror, “Welcome back, Jack.” Sean comes running out the house yelling, “He’s inside,” but it’s not really Sean; it’s Jack. Wu takes a beating and is thrown into the back of his own patrol car while Jack decides to find a prostitute to wield his maniacal fantasies on.

Thankfully, Nick and Hank find Wu. They also find Jack shortly after and in the nick of time before he slices open his next victim. They take Sean to the shop and let the potion do its job. This is not an easy undertaking as Jack makes a last ditch effort to save himself by grabbing Rosalee by the throat. This scene is quite intense and when Nick, Hank, and Wu begin shooting, I thought Sean was dead for sure. Thankfully, they aren’t using real bullets. Anyone else have heart palpitations? Is Jack gone for good? That puff of smoke exiting Sean’s mouth didn’t seem convincing. His wounds may have healed but I’m still concerned that something isn’t right.

To Catch a Grimm

I’m glad Trubel is back because Nick is going to need all the Grimm help he can get now this his mother is gone.

In “You Don’t Know Jack,” Juliette sends an email to Nick’s mother Kelly (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) telling her Nick is in mortal danger. While not completely true, Nick is, in a way, in danger. The royals certainly won’t shed a tear if Nick dies. And as Juliette proved in “You Don’t Know Jack,” she’s not afraid to take a life either.

As Juliette waits in the house she used to share with Nick, she begins to remember some of the good times they had. Tulloch does an amazing job walking a fine line between portraying the Juliette we’ve come to know and love, and a monster I’m inches away from loathing. I know Juliette can’t really help herself. She’s this powerful creature now – a one of a kind Hexenbiest. I can only imagine the surge of power rippling through her veins. But what transpires in the house when Kelly finally arrives is deplorable.

Observations

Henrietta (Garcelle Beauvais) may be dead but perhaps she’ll be useful just as Adalind’s dead mother was. If Rosalee and Adalind can create another Hexenbiest suppressant, maybe they can curb the ‘biestly’ side of Juliette.
Trubel (Jacqueline Toboni) is back at Monroe’s request and goes to The Spice Shop to tell Nick there are a “ton of people” in his house. The gruesome discovery of Kelly’s decapitated head gave me pause. The pain on Nick’s face, the disbelief in the audacity of it all made me clutch my chest in empathetic agony. I wonder though, is this a trick – is Kelly really dead? That could be a fake head used to lure Nick into a trap. Or, am I just doing a bit of wishful thinking?

Diana isn’t a baby anymore. I wonder if she senses Juliette is a Hexenbiest?

How long has Kelly been gone with Adalind’s first born, Diana? It hasn’t been quite a year yet yet baby Diana (Sloane McGinnis) isn’t a baby anymore. Do Hexenbiests age quickly in their youth only to stagnate their aging as they get older? And with Adalind pregnant again, she looks like she’s ready to give birth already. Did I miss something about Hexenbiest pregnancies and aging?
Juliette seems to have a healthy libido now that she’s a Hexenbiest. The way she takes charge, pushing Kenneth on the bed—the same bed she shared with Nick—is both kind of hot and a bit sad. It’s clear she’s not completely over the fact Adalind is pregnant and Nick is the unwitting father. Complicated much?

Overall

As penultimate episodes go, “Headache” does a great job of keeping you engaged and entertained from start to finish. I have no idea what is going to happen in next week’s finale but I’m biting my nails in anticipation. From the previews of the season four finale “Cry Havoc” at the end of “Headache,” I have a bad feeling one of our Scooby Gang may not make it out alive. Let’s hope my spidey senses are wrong.
