Grimm – “Clear and Wesen Danger” Review. Looks Can Be Deceiving.

This season of Grimm is proving to be quite interesting so far. While some plot points are predictable, particularly in “Clear and Wesen Danger,” the main story line involving the so-called “Wesen uprising” is more cloaked, making it difficult to discern where the writers are taking us. Is it just me or does something feel different about this season? I can’t quite put my finger on it; however, it leans heavily on the ominous side of things. I like it…a lot actually. “Clear and Wesen Danger” feels dark, like something terrible lurks nearby…and it’s not just the “Quijada Vil,” the scary new Wesen we meet.

Nick takes Hank, Wu, and Monroe to where Chavez”s body is…or where it should be. Who are these mysterious people who are so efficient at cleaning up a crime scene?

In last week’s episode, “The Grimm Identity,” Nick (David Giuntoli) and Adalind (Claire Coffee) became parents to a baby boy Adalind decided to name Kelly in honor of Nick’s recently deceased mother Kelly (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). By the end of “The Grimm Identity,” FBI Agent Chavez (guest star Elizabeth Rodriguez) lay dead at Nick’s side with her Wesen-phone ringing. We know the man on the other end of the call was Meisner (Damien Plucker) but Nick doesn’t. As we get into “Clear and Wesen Danger,” Nick tells the gang – Hank (Russell Hornsby), Sgt. Wu (Reggie Lee), Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell), and Rosalee (Bree Turner) – about Chavez’s tragic demise. Off topic, does Monroe have a last name? Previously, Wu didn’t have a first name, then the writers decided to give him one—Drew, as in Drew Wu—in season three. I digress.

Actor Paul Slavin does a fantastic job portraying Wemlinger as a seemingly mild mannered account. Beware the of those who look meek.

The case of the week involves embezzlement of large sums of money by a seemingly puny accountant named Paul Wemlinger (Jonathan Slavin), but you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Wemlinger isn’t as he appears and his bite is definitely worse than his bark…although with the type of Wesen he is, it’s more like some vicious reptilian creature than a canine. Wemlinger’s syphoning of his boss’ funds has a grander purpose. With the aid of another unlikely suspect, mild mannered assistant Betty Frame (Susan Ruttan), these two have a massive operation going on behind closed doors. Betty warns Nick, “Not even a Grimm can stop what’s coming,” followed by a Latin phrase, “Occultatum Libera!” Monroe roughly translates it to “free what’s hidden or free the hidden.” The question is – who or what is hidden?

Adalind confides in the only friend she has that she doesn’t want to become a Hexenbiest again.

Meanwhile, back at the homestead, Adalind tries to settle in but I agree with Monroe about Nick’s house – it’s just got bad juju. So much death, mayhem, and terrible things have happened there; it’s not a good place to stay anymore, let alone raise a baby who may or may not become a Grimm or Hexenbiest or as Adalind says, “Hexen-Grimm or Grimmenbiest!” My only hope is that the writers do not push Nick and Adalind into a relationship too soon. Yes, they have a child together, but he is the result of extremely strange circumstances. Thank goodness Hank needs Nick – those phone calls always seemed to ring right when Nick and Adalind are having a bonding moment.

Nick needs to grieve over his mother and his supposedly dead girlfriend Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch). Do you think she’s dead? I need to see a body. I think these writers have something tricky up their sleeves (*giving them the stink eye*). I thought perhaps Adalind’s firstborn, Diana (not seen), was in that underground cell guarded by the resistance, but now I’m wondering if it may be someone else. If you recall, Diana grew up very quickly in a short amount of time. Who’s to say she hasn’t matured even more given the unusual way her mother chose to regain her Hexenbiest powers. Don’t forget about all that bloody goop Adalind rubbed on her pregnant belly. And where is Trubel (Jacqueline Toboni)? Chavez gave Nick the Knight chess piece that belonged to Trubel so we know Chavez’s resistance pals are keeping Trubel somewhere.

“Clear and Wesen Danger” provides us with many questions and very little answers, but the queries prove to be quite perplexing, giving us with an intriguing episode. And with the FBI snooping around about Chavez’s mysterious and sudden disappearance, Nick needs to watch his back more than ever. Adalind may not want to be a Hexenbiest again, but that suppressant she took last season won’t last. Nick may need a Hexenbiest in his corner sooner rather than later.
