“Nothing, they say, is more certain than death, and nothing more uncertain than the time of dying.” – Grimm

This quote is trying to be a little more existential than it needs to be. Aside from being a tad morose, “Blood Magic” is an entertaining and engaging episode, topped off with a bit of frustration aimed at Eve (Elizabeth Tulloch). She enjoys tempting fate and taking risks all by herself. Eve’s self-sacrificing attitude annoys me but it might be the guilt she has suppressed over killing Nick’s (David Guintoli) mother and what not when transitioning from Juliette to über Hexenbiest Eve.

“Blood Magic” has a tragic story―a pseudo ‘case of the week’ type of tale, if you will―involving aging Wesen with dementia and Alzheimer’s. This is sure to spur on the waterworks, so grab some tissues.

We finally get a bit more traction on the mirror storyline but the Grimm writers continue to be elusive regarding the end of this amazing series. What is the big event? What is it that isn’t “real yet” that Diana (Hannah R. Lloyd) eluded to? Does she know more than she’s revealing or is it coming to her in bits and pieces? The runes are foretelling but not enough to help our Scooby gang figure out what’s in the mirror and in the “other place.” So many questions left unanswered and only two episodes remain before the series finale; let’s hope the writers give us a grand one, filled with shocking turns and even more exciting plot twists.

Every mirror in every house is being covered. No one is taking any chances but Eve wants to dive deeper into the mystery and asks Adalind (Claire Coffee) for help. I don’t think these two will become besties but Eve makes a great point, “I think one of the reasons it’s connecting to me is because I can see those symbols.” And Adalind realizes “Diana can see the symbols too.” But I’m more concerned about what Eve will find in Adalind’s mother’s old Hexenbiest books…particularly some dark magic…“blood magic,” to be more precise. I don’t know if Eve will revert back to the angry, power hunger Hexenbiest she once was (when she was Juliette); however, what if a taste of blood magic sets her off?

It does seem odd, yet fitting, that like an Etch A Sketch®, Eve gives the book a few good shakes to unscramble the letters in order to read the words. I love the way the writers add little nuances like this―and the strange book covers―to help give the tomes an ancient feel. I am again reminded of Harry Potter’s “Monster Book of Monsters.” Then I remember that Grimm gets its stories from the Brothers Grimm, whose stories were far more ghastly and magical, and older than J.K. Rowling’s beloved series of books.

Since “Oh Captain, My Captain,” we haven’t seen much interaction between Captain Sean Renard (Sasha Roiz) and his top detectives Nick and Hank (Russell Hornsby). Actually, Renard hasn’t talked to many people other than Adalind and their daughter Diana. But everything’s changed since Renard saw Diana’s drawings of the runes and he’s hot on the trail to uncover their origin. Adalind is wary of giving Renard too much information but she also knows he’s determined to go after whatever it is with a vengeance. The contention is palpable when Renard asks Nick about “the tunnel.” Nick’s assumption that Renard knows something more about the runes rings a tad peculiar. Is Nick simply guessing Renard has information or is it because Renard usually knows a little something about everything?

Completely off topic but I realize it’s been quite some time since Trubel (Jacqueline Toboni) made contact with anyone. Where is she? When is she coming back? Is she going to be part of the mysterious unknown event?

Overall

“Blood Magic” is equally enthralling and tremendously heart wrenching. From a “Gevatter Tod” Wesen (an insect looking creature), also known as the “Godfather of death,” helping elderly Wesen transition to Eve taking matters into her own bloodied hands, “Blood Magic” has your emotions soaring in various directions. While it’s unclear what the event is, at least getting through the mirror is solved. I’m taking a not-so-wild guess that whatever big thing that’s going to happen will occur during the series finale. I’m also sure plenty of crazy, chaotic, possibly tragic things will happen in the next couple of episodes. I’m not sure I’m ready to say goodbye yet.

What did you think of “Blood Magic?” I’d love to hear from other Grimmsters. Leave me a comment below or tweet me at @judybopp. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.
