Review: Nurse Jackie, S4 E9 – “Are Those Feathers?”
Air Date: Sunday, June 10, 2012 at 9:00 pm ET/PT on Showtime
Rating:
With Eddie (Paul Schulze) and Gloria (Anna Deavere Smith) being fired last week, the nurses at All Saints are wearing commemorative arm bands and have set up a collection jar on their behalf. I’m not sure whether Dr. Cruz (Bobby Cannavale) is stressed or if he’s just plain spiteful when he demands they get rid of the jar and “lose the arm bands. No one died.” I’d like to say his Hitler-esque behavior is stress-induced, but I honestly think the man is callous and cruel. Looks like everyone needs to stay on their best behavior if they want to keep their jobs.
Chaos reigns supreme at All Saints because another E.R. is diverting patients there. As the day progresses, Jackie (Edie Falco) seems to be pissing off Dr. Cruz more and more. She tries to keep everything on the down low but unfortunately, that doesn’t always work. Take the case of Tosha (Saidah Arrika Ekulona), a woman with a brain bleed. Just as she’s about to go into surgery, her father Morris (Helmar Augustus Cooper) calls for her to pick him up from Bellevue. Given the recent death of Tosha’s mother, Jackie practically begs Cruz to let her send someone to get Morris so Tosha can go to surgery with a clear mind, but no way is that happening. I’ll tell you, not only is Cruz mean, the man doesn’t have a sympathetic bone in his body. Jackie is left with no choice but to involve Zoey (Merritt Wever), telling her, “You handle it. Like you’re me.” Definitely not a smart move, ladies!
Remember God (Michael Buscemi) from season one? He’s been a recurring character on Nurse Jackie ever since. He’s a mentally ill man who hit his head and took on the persona of God, although he has spent a great deal of time yelling at everyone. But, in “Are Those Feathers,” God is painting a beautiful mural of Washington crossing the Delaware on the sidewalk in front of All Saints that appears to be an homage to Gloria and Eddie. When Cruz sees it, he demands that Jackie get rid of God. This is just another chance for Jackie to defy the doctor’s orders. Is the woman trying to get fired? I know she feels guilty about Eddie and Gloria losing their jobs, but losing her own job isn’t the answer.
Poor Dr. O’Hara (Eve Best). She’s in her last month of pregnancy and feeling all the aches and pains associated with a woman about to give birth—to say nothing of the pitiful crying jag she has! I feel so sorry for her when she sobs, “All I want to do is hold my baby on the outside.” I know exactly how she feels! Coop again tries to befriend O’Hara and commiserate with her when he accidentally discovers some information about her sperm donor. Coop is so cute when he sings a little ditty related to what he uncovers. I adore Coop; he tries to be everyone’s friend because that’s what he needs—someone to be his friend. I hope O’Hara lets him get close to the baby after it’s born. He’ll make a great surrogate daddy, don’t you think?
Memorable lines:
Gloria, after her exit interview: “I think I was too honest.”
Eddie: “See? And I think I wasn’t honest enough. These Quantum Bay guys—they know what they’re doing. I’ve never seen a cute girl in H.R. and all of a sudden, I’m at my exit interview, I’m talkin’ to Jessica fuckin Rabbit.
***
Construction worker (Joey Auzenne) to Thor (Stephen Wallem): “Your boss is a real dick smack.”
***
The cutest moment of “Are Those Feathers?” deals with…well, feathers! When Cruz instructs Jackie to quickly remove a coat from an unconscious patient, she rips the down-filled jacket wide open and feathers begin to fly. Then, when O’Hara enters the room to treat the man, the wide grin on her face and the remark she makes as feathers float everywhere put a huge grin on my face: “Oh my God! It looks like Narnia!”
Because Cruz is so stressed, he has what appears to be a panic attack. But Jackie is so tired of listening to him bark orders without providing the staff with any temporary assistance, she sends some outraged patients into the E.R. to confront Cruz. Way to go, Jackie! While I’m glad she finally stands up to him, I don’t think this is going to bode well for her. Cruz may have promised his son not to fire Jackie, but there’s only so much a man can take. Coop thankfully saves the day by getting Cruz out of Jackie’s way, but just wait ‘til the doctor finds out what Jackie does in his absence!
