Review: Lost Girl, S2 Ep 1, “Something Wicked this Fae Comes”

Air Date: Monday, April 16, 2012, 10/9c on Syfy

Rating:

In the season two premiere, the Fae world is growing increasingly dark. The deaths of nearly half the Fae elders and both the Light and Dark communities in disarray as a result (not to mention the death/disappearance of Saskia), Bo (Anna Silk) continues hunting the Underfae. How she finds the wherewithal to plod on without Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) speaks to her grit and determination and, well, it helps to work when you’re grieving a loss. It seems Dyson skipped town without saying a word to anyone, including his partner Det. Hale (K.C. Collins).

Bo (Anna Silk) and Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) meet Zael (Paulino Nunes)

What initially struck me about “Something Wicked this Fae Comes” is how dark it is. Last season Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) usually wore a lot of black, but now Bo and Dyson have joined in. They both have lost something and it’s as if they’re in mourning. Or maybe it’s just the latest fashion trend in the Fae world. Kenzi isn’t part of that world, but she’s practically kin. I admit to staring at Bo a lot, mostly because I covet her dark red leather vest. I want one just like it!

When Dyson appears halfway through the episode, man, was I glad to see him. Det. Hale is a fine investigator, and I love his verbal ping ponging with Kenzi, but Bo and Dyson are a team. They just… fit. And Bo knows it. When she notices his seeming disinterest and aloofness, she tells him:

As a team, we are pretty unbeatable. And, that is what is needed right now. You and I being Team Badass. You are going to put on your big-wolf pants and you’re gonna come with me and kick some tail. Or, I’m going to start kicking your tail.”

I can’t begin to say how much I like Bo in this scene—she’s decisive, bold, and brave. She thinks Dyson might have lost interest, but knows there are Fae matters at stake which take precedence. If they work as a team, they can solve the mystery of this traveling circus headed by a Fae named Zael (Paulino Nunes). They’ve sensed the Light Fae world is crumbling so they’ve come to take advantage by harnessing the power of the land for their own. A tattooed map on a Fae Guardian body shows Bo and the team that The Ash’s (Cle Bennett) connection with the land will be broken if they don’t find the human energy they need to keep it intact. Kenzi, ever the resourceful girl, finds the perfect place for Bo to get some sexing on—a rave. Something I really appreciate about Lost Girl is how much Bo is an equal opportunist; she goes with both male and female, it doesn’t matter. It’s all about the primal connection to feed.

Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) and Det. Hale (K.C. Collins) investigate Fae deaths

OK, that kiss between Bo and Dyson? Steaming. But only on Bo’s part. We know Dyson doesn’t feel anything for her now that his passion has been stripped away by The Norn (Kate Trotter), but he kisses Bo in the hope that what Hale said about real love’s kiss is true. Then he walks away, and you know he doesn’t. That’s the saddest part, but Bo doesn’t know it yet. I got a little choked up seeing him walk away, and seeing him heartbroken because he’s numb for her now. And when he tells her the truth, you cannot be sadder for both of them. This was a well-played scene between Silk and Holden-Ried.

Throughout the episode, Bo sees a little girl. At the Dal Riata, Bo is finally approached by this girl, who informs her, “Something old has awoken, something terrible, and it’s coming straight for you.

OBSERVATIONS:

Trick (Rick Howland) is waiting to see the fallout from the blood sacrifice he made to protect Bo last season. He thought it was the Sluagh, but alas, it’s not.

***

When Bo sees Dyson for the first time since returning to town, what’s the first thing she does? She punches him. And it’s no little sissy punch, it’s full-on and done in anger. He deserves it.

***

When the unfortunate Underfae vomits the human remains he ingested, it’s a disgusting scene that made me gag. I wasn’t expecting anything that gross.

***

Seeing Lauren (Zoie Palmer) geeking out on the job was pretty cute to witness. Who knew she finds glee in making scientific discoveries, and how much she loves carbs? It shows a more human side to her. We usually see her as stoic and professional so to witness her in geek mode was a treat.

***

Kenzi saying “crowd-sourced Viagra” when the team learns they need to harness sexual energy to prevent the Underfae from taking over Ash’s land? This was a clever bit of writing that made me chuckle. We can always count on Kenzi to bring the humor, no matter how heavy things get.
