If you weren’t in attendance during USA’s Psych Fan Appreciation Day in New York City on Thursday, October 6, 2011, you missed an exciting time. Upon arriving, I was greeted by a long line of fans waiting on stand-by just to get into the screening. (The line was wrapped around the block.) Talk about dedication. I got my credentials (a badge with an autographed photo of one of the cast!) and stood near the Green Carpet, waiting for the stars to arrive. And boy did they! From almost nowhere (we were seriously surprised) Ally Sheedy and Phylicia Rashad appeared to greet the cast with hugs and well wishes on the new season. Once the cast graciously greeted their fans and took photos, those fans lucky enough to have tickets to the screening were ushered into the beautiful Ziegfeld Theatre to watch the season six premiere on the big screen. Before the premiere aired, we got a special treat—clips from the music videos the cast has done, screen caps from upcoming season six episodes and a glimpse of all the celebrity guest stars for the season—all in genuine movie fashion with preview reels and “the movie guy” voice-overs.
Every seat in the auditorium was decked out with a bottle of water donning the two stars of Psych, James Roday and Dulé Hill—because you can never have enough paraphernalia. I have to admit (and I’m hanging my head with shame) I hadn’t watched Psych before this event. I know, I know… but let me just say, I am now a devoted fan. I’ve never laughed so hard as I did while watching the season six premiere. There wasn’t a dull moment during the entire episode and I could not believe how amazing the chemistry was between Roday and Hill. The two of them are like brothers in that they react to one another without a moment’s hesitation, and it’s genuine.
After the screening, the entire cast (James Roday, Dulé Hill, Corben Bernson, Timothy Omundson, Maggie Lawson, Kirsten Nelson) and creator of the show, Steve Franks sat panel style, ready to answer questions. But before any questions were answered, footballs with the Psych logo were tossed into the audience. I’m happy to say I avoided being beaned with one, but I wasn’t quick enough to catch one either. There was audience participation in a segment where two self-proclaimed Psych-O’s went head-to-head in a who-knows-the-most-about-Psych game. One of the games involved listing Gus’ nicknames, and the other (which really had the audience going) was listing the episode names. There were laughs galore and cheers as the games went on. Oh, and I can’t forget the toaster which made pineapple flavored toast. Nom, nom, nom…
Sadly, I had to leave early but I have been assured there is video of the panel available for your viewing pleasure. Be sure to check back with YEC and the Psych website (which is loaded with tons of fun and games for fans) for more information.
