Air Date: Sunday, July 14, 2013, 9/8c on HBO
RATING:
“Stackhouses, ya’ll need to calm the fuck down!” – Lafayette Reynolds
I’m at a loss on where to begin with this review. Not only that, I don’t have a ton to say about “F**k the Pain Away” considering there isn’t much about worth mentioning. I guess the title should have clued me in to what to expect, but I’d like to believe there’s more substance to each True Blood (TB) episode. You know, something to make us wonder what the point of this season might be and why I should continue watching.
Observations and thoughts:
Am I supposed to believe whatever brainwashing Jason (Ryan Kwanten) was put through has been cleared away with a bit of vampire blood? I guess you learn something new with each fabulous episode of TB! I mean, come on! You’ve got to be kidding me, writers. If this is the case, any person who’s been glamoured by a vamp would only need to ingest vampire blood to erase the effects. I’m not buying it.
The F-bombs are dropped like a war is going on. Oh wait, there is, isn’t there? Saying “fuck” repeatedly will not take away the “pain” of watching this bullshit episode. The point being what… vampires are super fast? Ooh… Or is the point to this waste of an hour to reveal Bill’s (Stephen Moyer) connection to every vampire in the known world. I’ll admit to finding it interesting that Billith takes his role as ‘a god amongst vamps’ seriously. But what I don’t get is how this newfound responsibility will wash away Bill’s sins. He isn’t redeemable in my eyes, no matter what he does or is able to do for the vampire race.
Sookie (Anna Paquin) enlists Lafayette’s (Nelsan Ellis) help in what is seen as a ridiculous séance turned kidnapping. I think I’m tired of seeing the spirit possessions at this point. We know Ellis is capable of stretching his acting chops and making us believe he’s various characters wrapped up in one. While I love how calm he remains when Lafayette needs to get the spirits under control, isn’t there something else his character can be doing besides playing medium? I’d like to see him utilized more and to a better purpose. Please. And speaking of the poor Ghost rendition, I’m interested in why Sookie’s parents would think killing her was a solution. I don’t give Warlow (Rob Kazinsky) much credit for anything, but I’m fascinated by his need to claim Sookie as his own. I guess it’s another of those vampire things where they have to claim “MINE!” before someone else can, though Warlow isn’t your typical vampire (and how about that insta-love, folks?). His hatred toward the bloodsuckers leads me to believe he could be someone to watch out for. I’m still not convinced he decimated the entire club of faeries a few weeks ago because of his original nature. Being a vampire/faerie hybrid has to cause some confusion for him. There are no other creatures like him so why would he murder those closest to him? I hope to see more of this storyline and some actual movement in the plot where Warlow is concerned.
As for Eric (Alexander Skarsgård), Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten), Tara (Rutina Wesley), and Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) being on lockdown, I’m bored. This isn’t what we want to see. This doesn’t do anything for the story but make Bill (and me) angry. You mean to tell me the vamps are so tame now that they aren’t attacking the doctors when they’re alone? What’s the worst that could happen? They’re already dead! Wouldn’t a few dead(er) vamps be a willing sacrifice for the greater good? The speed, strength, and sheer ferocity of the vampires should be enough to cow any humans with a gun. Alas, not in this paranormal world. What is the point of keeping vampires captive and experimenting on them aside from the obvious? Will we ever find out or is this plot point just filler?
Governor Burrell (Arliss Howard) is moving toward my shit list. Considering he has no qualms about keeping his daughter out of harm’s way, I’m beginning to wonder if the man has a screw loose. I’ll go along with what he’s selling for a while, but if he doesn’t get to the point soon, I’m done with him too.
I was expecting more from “F**k the Pain Away” but got a lot of f**king, copious amounts of the F-bomb, and people/vamps getting f**ked, literally and figuratively. Is this what television has come to? Give us more of the Warlow storyline and I’ll let this episode slide. Let me know your thoughts.
