Review: Lost Girl, S1, Ep 9 – “Fae Day”

It’s gotten to the point where Bo (Anna Silk) needs “a break from the Fae and their shit,” but Trick (Rick Howland) calls her to go to the Fae bar. An indicator of Bo’s lack of solidarity with both Light and Dark is evident when Trick informs her it’s the day of La Shoshain, a holy holiday where all Fae come together in peace—meaning, no violence—and can “fornicate across party lines.” Who wouldn’t enjoy such a holiday? It’s an excuse to drink, too, which Bo does happily.

How much of a role does Trick (Rick Howland) have in Bo's life?

There are a couple of major reveals in this episode. Siobhan the Banshee’s (Sarah Power) ear-piercing wail in the Fae bar foretells someone’s death by sundown. It could be any one of the members of the Five Families, but I figure it’s not a major character. Only problem is, Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) has befriended Sean Cavanaugh (Randal Edwards), a Light Fae who’s about to die. She does practically everything in her power to help him. She’s already developed a crush on him and her heart refuses to be broken. I really enjoy Kenzi here, especially with her natural black hair and blunt bangs. I’m kind of over the blonde wigs, though I get that she likes changing her appearance. More than that, really, is how loyal she is to Bo, and Sean, who just seems like this nice guy stuck in a mortal situationexcept for the Light Fae part. There’s something sweet about Kenzi and Sean’s interactions, especially when they’re playing games in the bar. You can see a romance blossoming but it isn’t meant to be. There’s only heartbreak on the horizon.

So, Lou Ann is still alive and has gone into hiding. Part of the secret of Bo’s family lies with her. Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) and Trick disagreeing over keeping Bo’s parentage a secret is telling. Dyson doesn’t like lying to her, but I can see why Trick wants to wait until he knows he can trust Bo. For someone who hasn’t chosen sides yet, Bo can seem wishy washy to other Fae.  How can either side trust her? She’s certainly still naïve, as we see when she invokes the Agallamh, a peace offering given to Sean and his brother Liam (Ben Lewis). The caveat? The person who invokes this will die if peace doesn’t occur. What a stupid thing to do considering she knows so little about her lineage. Shouldn’t she stop and think first before taking such drastic action? Trick giving her the Fae history book is no small gesture; I feel like she’s reading it like one would read a book of fairy tales. In some ways, she’s like a young girl who sometimes isn’t aware of the gravity of her situation.

When Sean dies (poor thing, I did like that fellow), I actually teared up when Kenzi cries and Bo comforts her. She makes me wish she had a sweetie in her life but then, the dynamic between her and Bo would change. I don’t know how I would feel about that. They are pretty much first in each other’s lives.

Well, color me shocked when Trick is revealed to be the Blood King. I didn’t see that coming. Could this be why he looks so sad when he has to inflict death on Bo in case Agallamh is futile? Seeing him pull out his tools with hesitation and sadness makes me think he’s got a huge role to play in Bo’s life. Could he possibly be her… father? I can’t wait to find out.
